Last month MG Motor Australia announced discounted national driveaway pricing for its two battery-electric models – the MG4 and ZS EV – and now the budget-friendly Chinese brand has done the same for the rest of its range.
A $1000 price cut across the MG3 hatch range follows a 36 per cent sales decline for Australia’s most popular light car so far this year and comes ahead of the release of an all-new model that’s expected to bring a $5000 price hike and the option of hybrid power for a further $4000.
As a result, Australia’s cheapest new car is now priced from $18,990 drive-away for the MG3 Core – see the full price list below.
At the same time, there’s also a $1000 price reduction for MG’s top-selling model and Australia’s favourite small SUV, the MG ZS, sales of which are up 9.2 per cent this year, with prices now starting at $22,990 drive-away.
The more upmarket ZST, meantime, is now between $1500 and $3500 cheaper (from $25,490 drive-away), while the MG HS mid-size SUV has received price cuts of between $3000-$6000 and now starts from $29,990 drive-away before the arrival of a new model later this year and following a 63 per cent HS sales slide this year.
That makes both the MG3 and ZS the most affordable they’ve been since mid-2022, the ZST Core, Vibe and Excite the same prices they launched with in 2020 and 2021, and the ZST Essence and most HS variants (including the plug-in hybrid Plus EV variant) the cheapest they’ve ever been.
The MG 5 small sedan remains unchanged from the $24,990 drive-away starting price its was released with last year, but that’s expected to increase with the addition of more standard safety equipment in coming months.
Effective from April 1, 2024, MG Motor Australia’s new permanent national drive-away pricing structure follows a series of price rises over the past two years and a 1.2 per cent overall sales increase for MG in Australia in the first two months of this year, thanks mainly to the new MG4 electric hatch and MG5 petrol sedan.
That’s less than the total new-vehicle market increase of 13.4 per cent this year and much less than MG’s 17.7 per cent sales increase in 2023, when sales of Chinese cars surged by 57 per cent.
“MG is putting customers first by ensuring everyone can access a wide range of affordable vehicles thanks to reduced nationwide drive-away pricing on our most popular models,” said MG Motor Australia CEO, Peter Ciao.
“Whenever we can pass price reductions like this onto our customers, we will make sure we do.
“In a market where customers are becoming increasingly aware of their finances, providing transparency on the final cost customers will pay for purchasing and servicing a new vehicle is very important.
“That’s why MG has made the move to offer both to customers with no hidden costs,” he said.
