The 2025 MG U9 will be ready to go head to head with the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger when it arrives in Oz later this year, with a host of accessories already being developed to ensure it’s ready for whatever Aussies throw at it.
The Chinese brand’s first dual-cab ute – which debuted at last month’s Melbourne Motor Show – has already begun testing Down Under and is set to be in showrooms before the year’s end.
Now, the brand’s local boss, Peter Ciao, has revealed more detail on the incoming pick-up’s local program.
Having just returned from a trip to Melbourne to meet with three of Australia’s big-name 4x4 vehicle accessory specialists, including ARB and AutoPacific, Ciao told carsales a range of rugged accessories will be offered to U9 buyers, including bullbars, sports bars and ladder racks, as well as camping and leisure items like rooftop tents.
Electric roller shutters, load bars, and tub racks are also on the agenda, courtesy of Victorian-based accessory company HSP, which already lists a range of accessories for the U9 on its website, including electric roller shutters from $3150.
“I just arrived back [from Melbourne] and I was in three factories: HSP, ARB, and AutoPacific. I will develop accessories,” said Ciao.
The U9 will come powered by 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine good for 160kW and 520Nm. The newcomer will have a 4x4 powertrain and come with a 3.5-tonne towing capacity.
When asked if MG plans to eventually offer a more heavy-duty U9 with 4.5-tonne towing to match the likes of the new Ford Ranger Super Duty and GWM Tank 700, Ciao remained tight-lipped.
“For the ute, I will have an all-new strategy but I will not share today,” he said.
“It’s very, very special; you will love it, I can guarantee you. For Australian ute drivers, it’s fantastic news.”
