MINI Countryman pricing; Paceman production confirmed

Pricing announced for MINI's not-so-mini Countryman range and production green light granted for Paceman

MINI's largest model yet, the Countryman will arrive in local showrooms late next month. The range will include four variants, starting with the Cooper model for $37,700.

Following the turbocharged Cooper S ($47,500) and four-wheel drive Cooper S ALL4 ($50,400) models will be a 1.6-litre turbodiesel version, the Cooper D, available during March from $40,950. The diesel Countryman's combined consumption rating is well under 5L/100km (4.4) and output is 82kW with a hefty 270Nm from 1750rpm.

MINI's personalisation and Chilli upgrade packages, as seen in the Cooper hatch models, are also available for the Countryman. Add $5400 for the Chilli spec to the naturally aspirated models and $5650 if ordering an S version.

The four-door MINI offers the high ride of a small SUV and similar storage capacity of a handy hatchback, according to our reviewer at the international launch. Local launch for the Countryman is scheduled for early February, so stay tuned for our verdict on how well the big MINI performs on our roads.

Meanwhile, MINI's good-looking Paceman concept car shown at this month's Detroit motor show has reportedly been given the green light for production. It appeared close to ready on the MINI stand at Detroit's Cobo Centre -- much like other concepts quickly turned into production versions by the brand.

MINI used the Detroit motor show unveiling to gauge response regarding production. Obviously public reaction was positive enough...

The Paceman is based on the Countryman's platform but presented in a two-door coupe form. The Paceman also uses the high riding four-door's ALL4 permanent all-wheel-drive system, mentioned above.

There's no word as yet from BMW Australia whether the two-door Paceman is on the agenda for local showrooms.

In other MINI model news, the Coupe revealed in concept form at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show is scheduled for release, at least in European markets, later this year. There's also talk of a MINI Roadster arriving late 2011.
