Mitsubishi announces 380 pricing

Just three days ahead of the car's public debut at the 2005 Australian International Motor Show, Mitsubishi has announced pricing for its 'make-or-break' 380 sedan. And at first glance at least, the message is 'more for less…'

Mitsubishi has released details of pricing for its new 380 sedan. Coming just days before the car’s public debut at the 2005 Australian International Motor Show in Sydney, pricing for the 380 kicks off at $34,490 for the base model manual 380 and ranges through to $47,990 for the top-of-the-range auto GT.

Mitsubishi has also confirmed its now-signature 5/10 warranty will extend to the 380 and for the first time Down Under, the purchase price will also include five-year roadside assistance across the range. A Premium roadside scheme will be offered on LX and GT models.

The base model 380 kicks off at $34,490 with the auto version an extra $1500 at $35,990. An extra $1500 gets the Safety and Style Pack which adds 16-inch alloys and Traction Control.

The base 380’s standard equipment includes air conditioning, front side airbags, and rear power windows. These features are offered at extra cost on Falcon and Commodore base models, says Mitsubishi.

The next step up the 380 ladder is the VRX. Featuring styling cues shared with the GT range-topper, the sports 380 is priced from $38,490/$39,990 (man/auto). The auto only 380 LS luxury 'opener' is priced $1000 more at $40,990.

According to Mitsubishi, the upper luxury 380 LX and upper sports luxury 380 GT models, priced at $46,490 and $47,990 respectively, represent a "substantial improvement in value for money," and provide “an obvious competitive RRP advantage over the key rivals.” Read: Calais, Fairmont Ghia and Camry Azzura. Mitsubishi also claims at this end of the 380 range its new cars are equally competitively priced against the likes of Honda Accord, Honda Accord Euro, Nissan Maxima and Mazda6.

Major 380 option pricing announced today include:

  • Metallic/pearlescent paint: $300
  • Safety and style package (16-inch alloy wheels and traction control)
    – available on 380: $1500
  • Power tilt and slide sunroof – available on 380 and VRX: $2000
  • Power seat upgrade  (leather with 10-way driver’s seat with three
memory settings and six-way passenger’s seat) – available on LS: $3750
  • Sports-tuned suspension with a strut tower brace – available on 380 and LS: $990
  • Leather sports seats/electro-chromatic mirror/driver and passenger
sunvisor extensions and illuminated vanity mirrors – for VRX: $3000

In summarising the 380 range, Mitsubishi is calling its new offering: “a substantial improvement in value-for-money buying in the Large car market.” It claims its 380 models are priced up to $6800 less than the equivalent Holden and Ford models.

With that in mind, expect a bevy of further claims and counter claims from the local RWD manufacturers as well as Toyota. The battle lines, it seems, have been drawn…
