Australia’s top-selling compact SUV, the Mitsubishi ASX, has been boosted with a more powerful engine option and new variant names well-known from the company’s history.
A 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 12 per cent more power (123kW v 110kW) and 13 per cent more torque (222Nm vs 197Nm) compared to the familiar 2.0-litre ASX is a key addition for model year 2020.
But the return of the GSR and MR badges will resonate with fans of the now-defunct Lancer passenger car.
These two models form what Mitsubishi dubs a “sports range” for ASX. The MR gets the 2.0-litre engine and the GSR the 2.4.
The only other model to pick up the big donk is the luxury Exceed. The ES and LS continue on with the 2.0, the former the only model with a choice of five-speed manual as well as CVT auto.
Exceed, LS and ES versions are on sale now, while the GS and MR arrive in December.
Autonomous emergency braking – or Forward Collision Mitigation, as Mitsubishi dubs it – has now been made standard across all models.
The entry-level ES offers a bunch of safety features standard on other models such as lane departure warning and rear cross traffic alert as part of a $2500 ADAS option pack.
Speaking of dollars, Mitsubishi is now quoting drive-away pricing rather than list pricing. But essentially, in list terms, ES and LS go up by $500 and the Exceed by $2000.
Pricing for the MR and GSR is yet to be announced, but it appears the former will fit between ES and LS and the latter between LS and Exceed.
See the bottom of this story for pricing details.
So what else has changed? There are new-look LED headlights, a new front bumper and bonnet design and what Mitsubishi dubs a “bolder” dynamic shield grille.
Inside the five-door front-wheel drive wagon, an 8.0-inch touch-screen replaces the old 7.0-inch design and all models get an electrochromatic rear-view mirror.
The GSR gets flappy gearchange paddles, while the Exceed alone now has a Rockford Fosgate premium audio system, TomTom navigation and new trims.
Additional styling elements for the GSR include black cloth headlining, micro-suede and leather-look seats with red stitching, and the addition of a sports rear spoiler.
On sale since 2010, the current Mitsubishi ASX is the biggest selling compact SUV in Australia and Japanese car-maker’s second-biggest seller behind the Triton ute.
