Mitsubishi Outlander gets top safety marks

The new Outlander medium SUV gets five stars from ANCAP

Local testing of the new Mitsubishi Outlander has seen the medium SUV awarded five stars by Australian NCAP (ANCAP). This follows a five-star safety rating from the European NCAP authority.

The five-star ANCAP safety rating handed down to the Mitsubishi Outlander -- which is priced from $28,990 for the entry-level ES variant -- is crucial for new vehicle sales and brand reputation, says Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited's Corporate Communications Manager, Caitlin Beale.

"Five-star safety is extremely important to our customers and I am sure that if you are in the market for an SUV then this should put the Outlander at the top of your shopping list," she said.

"The vehicle was designed and engineered to meet a five star rating and it offers a high level of safety - both active and passive - with a host of built-in safety features," Ms Beale stated.

All Outlander models are fitted as standard with seven airbags, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, rear parking sensors, hill-start assist and electronic brake force distribution.

Top-shelf Aspire models can also be optioned with Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM) and Adaptive Cruise Control, both of which use radar technology to automatically apply the brakes to prevent and collision and keep a pre-determined distance between the car in front, respectively.

"Wherever possible we aim to achieve this [five star] rating on every vehicle we launch," Ms Beale told motoring.com.au.

That said, it remains to be seen whether the next generation Mirage compact car will get the same five-star result as the Outlander.

"It hasn't been tested yet," Ms Beale said of the upcoming Mitsubishi Mirage.

Mitsubishi offers the new Outlander with three engine choices, 2.0-litre petrol, 2.4-litre petrol and 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engines. Only the 2.0-litre petrol is 2WD, while the rest are all-wheel drive. Gearbox choices include five-speed manual (5MT), CVT, and there's even a traditional six-speed automatic (6AT).

Five and seven seat versions of the Outlander are offered.
