Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV also scores MY23 updates

More safety equipment at both ends of the plug-in hybrid SUV range drives prices up

Mitsubishi Australia has predictably replicated the vast majority of its MY23 Outlander updates across to the more efficient and more powerful 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid EV variants, thereby rounding out the mid-size SUV’s model year tweaks.

The changes consist primarily of enhanced safety credentials for the lower grades and more toys for the higher end variants, with the most obvious difference between the combustion-powered and electrified line-ups being the absence of PHEV Black Edition.

Starting at the bottom of the range, the entry-level PHEV ES has scored automatic high-beam, automatic rear braking and rear cross traffic alert for the 2023 model year, the additions of which and the new range-wide rear AEB trailer connection override have upped the starting price by $1000.

This means PHEV portfolio now starts from $55,490 plus on-road costs, with an identical price increase being bestowed upon the mid-range Aspire ($61,990 plus ORCs).

The year-on-year increase grows to $1500 when referring to the high-end Exceed ($67,490) and flagship Exceed Tourer ($69,990) on account of their shared new heated steering wheel, sequential front indicators, traffic jam assist, speed limit assist, steering wheel grip monitor and lane centring systems.

Heated rear seats have also been added to the Exceed Tourer’s standard kit list, along with another two optional two-tone colour schemes – Stirling Silver/Black Mica and Titanium/Black Mica.

It’s not quite all good news though; the semi-conductor shortage has forced Mitsubishi to scrap the auto-tilting function for the driver’s wing mirror on both Exceed variants.

“Following the success of its launch in August 2022 the Outlander Plug-In Hybrid EV is proving to be an immensely popular option for Australians looking to travel, without having to worry about range or infrastructure,” Mitsubishi Australia CEO Shaun Wescott said.

“The Outlander Plug-In Hybrid EV receives some luxurious updates and key safety enhancements for 23MY, to ensure it can continue to be the vehicle of choice for those looking to adventure with a smaller carbon footprint.”

As with the petrol portfolio, production of the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV started last month and first local deliveries are expected as of January.
