Mitsubishi's $17,990 one-tonne bombshell

If you're a tradie, primary producer or delivery specialist, make no mistake, Mitsubishi is after your cash! Indeed, with the announcement of a special single-cab one-tonner priced to ABN holders from $17,990 (including GST) as part of its new ML Triton petrol four-cylinder light commercial range, Mitsubishi has effectively set a new specification and value benchmark.

Not a special offer, this ongoing package is based on the just-released ML Triton GL 2.4 single cab-chassis model and includes a factory tray, Bluetooth phone kit and air-conditioning as standard.

The new four-cylinder models complete the rollout of the ML Triton range as part of Mitsubishi's aggressive product-led turnaround. An automatic diesel version of the Triton 4X4 will arrive in the second half of 2007 to widen the appeal of the existing range. 

The new $17,990 GL ABN model is specifically aimed at making up lost market share after Mitsubishi's 2006 sales in this segment were dependent on limited supplies of the outgoing and smaller MK Triton model.

According to Mitsubishi, over 40 per cent of annual light commercial sales occur in the end of financial year period between April and June 30. The arrival of the brand's new four-cylinder workhorse models is timed to capitalise on this.

For Mitsubishi's once-beleagured but now revitalised dealer network, it's party time for what is shaping up to be the biggest Australian market ever for this period.

Mitsubishi is not pulling any punches as it claims its new Triton GL 2.4 one tonne tray offers $2490 of extra value over its Toyota Hilux Workmate rival and represents a substantial $5470 better deal than its Holden Rodeo DX competitor.

Compared to the Hilux Workmate, Mitsubishi claims its $17,990 Triton ABN special offers air-conditioning, electric windows, central locking, roadside assist, 16-inch wheels (versus 14-inch), cloth seat trim, rear window demister and front mud flaps as well as the company's unique Mitsubishi's unique five year/10 year warranty. The Triton does concede some cubes, however (2.4 versus 2.7-litres).

Over the Rodeo, Mitsubishi says the Triton offers similar benefits plus it adds the driver and passenger airbags, seatbelt pre-tensioners and tachometer missing from the Rodeo DX while offering an equivalent mechanical package that delivers better fuel economy.

Mitsubishi notes that all of the ML Triton advances that arrived in July 2006 with the launch of the diesel and V6 petrol versions, also apply to the cheaper four-cylinder petrol models. These include "striking exterior styling, spacious interior, car-like performance, ride and handling, excellent economy and a comprehensive list of safety features -- while still retaining Triton's trademark attributes of strength, reliability and toughness."

The significant boosts in cabin space also apply to the four-cylinder models especially the double cab with its 150mm boost in cabin length, extra 25mm in front headroom and a 60mm rear legroom and headroom increase.

The 4G64 Euro III four-cylinder petrol engine is a variation of Mitsubishi's other 2.4-litre light commercial engines and is specific to the ML Triton with basic single overhead camshaft, 16 valves and balancer shaft delivering 94kW/5250rpm and 194Nm/4000rpm.

It is also LPG-compatible.

A five-speed manual with two-wheel (rear) drive is the sole driveline combination.

Mitsubishi claims a class-leading 10.9lt/100km combined fuel figure for the new powertrain.

All models feature rack and pinion steering with class-leading turning circle, double wishbone coil spring front suspension and revised leaf springs for extra ride comfort. Where ABS with EBD is not fitted, Mitsubishi claims it is an "accessibly priced" option on all other models.

Air-conditioning, power windows, central locking with remote keyless entry, cloth seat trim and AM/FM radio/CD tuner with MP3 compatibility are standard on all models. Standard safety features include dual front airbags and Mitsubishi's RISE rigid passenger cell safety structure.

The new range is available as the GL cab-chassis or the GLX double cab, both with a choice of pick-up bodies or tray style load areas. The GLX adds power mirrors, centre console box and remote fuel filler flap. A range of metallic and pearlescent colour options are available on both models for $350.

Apart from the $17,990 special ABN model, the GL single cab-chassis normally starts at $19,990 and $25,690 for the GLX double cab pick-up.
