More power for Merc's Australian C 63 AMG as standard

Edition 507 C 63 AMG due here in August is on the cards to succeed the current Performance Pack variants

Mercedes-Benz Australia is expected to call it a day for its Performance Pack upgrade for the storming C 63 AMG.

But there's no need to mourn the passing of the 358kW variants; Benz will instead offer as standard the 37kW peak power boost from the new 'Edition 507', which is due here in August and also produces 15kW more than the Performance Pack models.

"507 will probably replace the Performance Pack, but we haven't decided yet," said David McCarthy, Senior Manager Corporate Communications at Mercedes-Benz Australia.

Named Edition 507 for its horsepower output, the 373kW C 63 will be distinguished from the standard C 63 by the bonnet it shares with the Black Series model and 19-inch forged alloy wheels, finished in either titanium grey or matt black with bright-sheen rim flanges.

In addition to the power hike, Edition 507 gains 10 extra Newton-metres of torque, taking the total to 610Nm for the new model, which Benz claims will beat the standard car to 100km/h by 0.2 seconds – 4.2 seconds for the sedan and coupe or 4.3 for the wagon. Those times even hold at bay the 358kW Performance Pack variants, by 0.1 seconds.

Mercedes-AMG has cranked out the extra performance from the 6.2-litre V8 by lightening the engine internals and adopting a new engine management system. Forged pistons from the SLS AMG are used in place of the original pistons and, along with new connecting rods and a lightweight crankshaft, save 3kg in total.

Brakes are upgraded also, with composite brake rotors at the front measuring 360x36mm. Callipers are six-piston aluminium type at the front and four-piston type at the rear.

Mercedes-Benz is offering three different interior trim packages for the Edition 507: porcelain designo leather/DINAMICA, black designo leather/DINAMICA and black designo leather.

The 507’s steering wheel has a marking at the 12 o'clock position and the gearshifter is trimmed in DINAMICA. Both wheel and lever – plus the gaiter for the shifter – feature a light-coloured contrasting stitch.

Australia's allocation of Edition 507 will commence production in June and after shipping here, the new cars will go on sale in August.
