More Skodas on the way

Skoda will add a diesel all-wheel variant to the Superb range, in addition to Fabia Monte Carlo and Yeti SUV at Australian International Motor Show Fabia Monte Carlo special edition

Skoda is set to expand its model range Down Under with Yeti and Fabia ranges to be made available locally by the end of the year, as well as a new 103TDI (diesel) all-wheel drive version of its flagship Superb and Superb Estate which will arrive in August.

Joining the recently revised Octavia and Superb ranges, the Yeti and Fabia bring the model family tally to four, giving small hatch and compact SUV buyers even more choice and adding better value offerings to the Skoda range.

Speaking to the Carsales Network at a model drive of the Fabia RS and Yeti 2.0 TDI this week, head of Skoda head of sales and marketing and board member, Jurgen Stackmann said the brand is "chasing sales from Japanese and Korean brands, and is especially keen to model itself after Kia in Australia".

He added Skoda had been "impressed by that brand's [Kia's] growth in a relatively short timeframe".

Skoda will have its Polo-based Fabia and softroader Yeti in Aussie showrooms by September and October respectively. They will offer more mainstream family motoring than the slow-selling Roomster which is slated to make a return here early in the new year. Fabia Combi (wagon) and the light car range's impressive hot hatch variant, the Fabia RS will give even more choice.

Skoda will lead the new model charge with a manual-only 77TSI (petrol) powered Fabia Monte Carlo special edition and versions of the Yeti compact SUV. Both models make their local debut at July's Australian International Motor Show in Melbourne. Initially, Yeti will arrive with the choice of entry-spec 77TSI (petrol) front-wheel drive and upticked 103TDI (diesel) all-wheel drive. Both Yeti models will be offered with a choice of manual and DSG transmissions.

When Roomster, Fabia Combi and Fabia RS arrive in 2012, Stackmann said Skoda Australia will then look at adding a 118TSI-powered Yeti to the range, but will first gauge how well the model is received.

Pricing and specifications for both Fabia and Yeti have not yet been finalised, but in line with previous statements from Skoda, expect the pair to between five and 10 per cent cheaper than similarly spec'ed Polo and Tiguan respectively.
