Morgan Plus 4 70th Anniversary marks end of era

British car-maker creates limited run of 20 last-gen Plus 4s ahead of all-new replacement's arrival

Morgan has announced it is celebrating seven decades of continuous production of its Plus 4 sports car with a special-edition based on its outgoing model.

Announcing just 20 Morgan Plus 4 70th Anniversary Editions will be made, the car-maker says the special limited run of small British roadsters is sold out, despite a starting price of £60,995 ($A120,000).

Heralded as an end of an era, the final Plus 4s will be the last Morgan ever to be based on the British car-maker's traditional steel-frame chassis, following the announcement the next-generation Plus Four will switch to an all-new bonded aluminium architecture.

Instead of its replacement's BMW-sourced 2.0-litre, the final farewell to the iconic Morgan model relies on a Ford 2.0-litre four-cylinder Duratec engine that's had its power boosted from the standard car's 115kW to 134kW.

To liberate the extra kiloWatts, Morgan's in-house tuner Aero Racing added a new sports exhaust and an engine remap, reducing the car's 0-100km/h acceleration time fall from around eight seconds to 'less than seven seconds'.

As well as the extra oomph, the anniversary Mog comes with plenty of exclusive differences to mark the end of an era.

These include a gold-painted steel chassis, platinum silver metallic paint, smoked grey wire wheels, a deeper front valance and a darkened metallic finish for the A-pillars, side-screens, stone guards and exhaust tips.

Climb into the open-air cockpit and each 70th Anniversary Plus 4 gets a numbered plaque, embroidered seats and a Ravenwood veneer dash. There's also dark grey weave carpets and a small Mota-Lita steering wheel.

Other special features for the run-out model include heated seats, footwell lighting and a transmission and steering wheel cowl trimmed in high-grade leather.

According to Morgan, the first four cars were completed before the car-maker, which is nestled in the Malvern Hills, decided to close the factory for the month in the wake of the Coronavirus.

Once the factory reopens, Morgan says it will finish building the final batch ahead of deliveries beginning this April.
