MotoGP BMW M8 Safety Car makes debut

M5 Coupe Safety Car pensioned off for flagship M8; some of its go-faster parts could head to a BMW dealer near you

BMW has revealed pictures of the M8 Safety Car that will support the MotoGP race series.

Following on from the M5 sedan, and the M2 Coupe before that, the German car-maker says the the M8 marks 20 years of providing track-tuned safety cars for the popular grand prix motorcycle world championship.

Based on the recently revealed M8 Competition, the latest MotoGP Safety Car is claimed to have benefited from the existence of the BMW M8 GTE race car that was developed side-by-side with the road car.

Featuring a light bar, roll-cage, fire-suppression system, plus a pair of Recaro race seats with a full race harness, the M8 sports a huge rear wing hinting a track-optimised aero that includes anti-dive planes up front and a more aggressive front splitter.

Under the bonnet the twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 remains unchanged, producing the same 460kW as the standard car, despite combined with a titanium exhaust.

Other new parts M Performance-branded accessories available from your local BMW dealer include a carbon-fibre engine cover, rear diffuser, steering wheel and side strakes all made from the same material.

To cope better with the track work the M8 Competition also rides on Michelin Cup tyres. Sadly, the light bar and front LED flashing lights are unlikely to be dealer-fit options.
