Munro Mk1 reveal locked in for December 5

Electric Land Rover Defender rival billed as world’s most capable battery-powered 4x4 off-roader

Scottish EV start-up Munro Motors will unveil its inaugural vehicle, the 2023 Munro Mark 1, on December 5 – and claims the vehicle will be “the world’s most capable all-electric 4x4”.

Engineers behind the GMC Hummer, Mercedes-Benz EQG, Jeep Wrangler EV and other electric off-roaders might disagree, but Munro is not stepping back from its claims.

Full details are still to be revealed, but as we’ve reported the Munro Mk1 will feature a 280kW/700Nm electric powertrain that draws energy from an 80.1kWh battery.

It drives all four wheels via a traditional mechanical 4x4 driveline with high and low range, locking differentials and solid axles.

The driving range is rated at only 270km, but in extreme off-road conditions Munro claims the Mk1 can operate for up to 16 hours on a single charge.

Other details now confirmed include seating for five, a 1000kg payload capacity and a braked towing capacity of 3500kg.

“The Munro Mk1 will effortlessly go to places others can’t reach, with bulletproof durability and ultra-low running costs,” said Munro CEO Russell Peterson.

A design sketch was released in conjunction with the reveal announcement, showing the Mk1’s a boxy silhouette and impressively short overhangs.

Peterson said the Mk1 would make an ideal choice for fleets seeking to minimise their environmental footprint in the industries such as construction, agriculture, mining, forestry, mountain rescue and remote infrastructure maintenance.

Private buyers are also on Munro’s radar for the Mk1, which will be built in right-hand drive at the company’s Glasgow facility. Production targets include 2500 units by 2025 and 5000 by 2030.
