An updated MY20 Mazda CX-9 is now available, priced $500 lower for entry-level Sport models (now from $45,920 plus on-road costs) but higher for all other variants.
The former Azami LE flagship has now been dropped from the range and a $2543 price rise applied to the Azami AWD, meaning it now tops the range at a higher $69,303 plus ORCs (see below for the full price list).
Beyond the price changes, the MY20 Mazda CX-9 brings a host of worthwhile running changes to safety, dynamics, comfort, functionality and design.
These include a larger 9.0-inch infotainment touch-screen and a hands-free tailgate function allowing drivers to open and close the boot using a kick gesture.
Dynamically, the addition of G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus) adds braking functionality to the GVC system that momentarily cuts torque to one front wheel while turning to improve cornering and straight-line stability.
The CX-9’s all-wheel-drive system also adds the latest iteration of Mazda’s Off-Road Traction Assist, which is designed to prevent tyre slip on undulating roads.
In terms of safety, night-time pedestrian detection has been added to the Cx-9’s autonomous emergency braking system, while improved adaptive LED headlights are said to offer greater visibility without dazzling other road users.
All models also add an auto-hold function to the electric parking brake and USB ports for the third row of seats, access to which has also been made safer and easier by a switch that tilts the middle seat forward on the side of the seat cushion where third-row passengers can easily reach it.
While the Azami replaces Azami LE at the top end for more money, Mazda says it gains a smoother, higher-quality feel to its Nappa leather, which is offered in two colour options – Walnut Brown and Pure White – both combined with black for a two-tone colour scheme.
Externally, there’s a new bright 18-inch wheel finish and a new brilliant dark 20-inch wheel finish. And, in line with updates across the Mazda range, the 2020 CX-9 also scores updated vehicle badging and a new key fob design – both first introduced on 2019 Mazda3.
All Mazda CX-9s continue to be powered by a 2.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder matched with a six-speed automatic transmission and the choice of either front- or all-wheel drive.
