The new 2024 Mazda CX-80 large family SUV has been revealed ahead of its Australian launch before the end of this year.
Local pricing and specification details are still to be confirmed, but the three-row Mazda CX-80 will sit alongside the equally all-new – but shorter and five-seat-only – 2024 Mazda CX-70 in the Japanese brand’s bulging SUV line-up.
Closely resembling the Mazda CX-60 mid-size SUV but with a noticeably longer wheelbase, the CX-80 serves as a replacement for the Mazda CX-9 and is primed to become the volume-selling model among the car-maker’s new-generation large SUV portfolio, which also includes the flagship Mazda CX-90.
The CX-80’s extended wheelbase measures more than 3m long, with all variants set to offer three rows in either a 2+3+2 seven-seat layout or an optional 2+2+2 six-seat format, where the second-row bench is replaced by two individual captain’s chairs.
All-important specs such as boot space, towing capacity, model grades and equipment levels are not yet confirmed.
Ditto for powertrains, but we expect Mazda’s latest petrol and diesel six-cylinder engines and four-cylinder plug-in hybrid to be employed.
All three powertrains are paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and all versions will come with a rear-biased all-wheel drive system.
Tech highlights will include the box-fresh Mazda Connected Services suite, MyMazda smartphone app compatibility, unresponsive driver support system, head-on traffic avoidance assist and a new ‘trailer hitch view’ that uses the reversing camera and advanced graphics on the infotainment screen to help position the vehicle relative to a caravan or trailer.
Based on the previous CX-5/CX-8 relationship, the CX-80 will likely start $7000-$10,000 upstream of the CX-60, which projects an approximate starting price of $68,000 plus on-road costs.
That would also leave room up to the CX-90, which starts from $74,550 and goes all the way to $101,130 plus ORCs.
