The second-generation MG HS mid-size SUV will make its global debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 11, when it will be revealed with both turbo-petrol and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
Due to arrive in Australia by the end of September, the new MG HS will don a much sleeker and more modern design than its Mazda CX-5-mimicking predecessor, clearly taking styling cues from the new MG3 hatch.
A 25-second teaser video showing off several of the new model’s key exterior details reveals slimline headlights, crisp tail-light signatures, a full-width brake-light strip and wider rear haunches, all of which combines to produce a sportier overall vibe that’s almost identical to that of the Chinese-market Roewe RX5 on which it’s based.
MG has described the new look as “contemporary” and “sophisticated” and it’s wrapped around an interior that’s claimed to offer “enhanced space and an array of new, driver-focussed technology”.
Australian homologation documents reveal the new MG HS will be offered here with the familiar array of 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre turbo-petrol powertrains, albeit with higher power outputs.
According to the documents seen by carsales, the front-drive 1.5T variants will produce 125kW (up from 119kW), while the all-wheel drive 2.0T will be good for 170kW (up from 168kW).
The former will be matched as standard with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, the latter a nine-speed torque-converter auto.
There’s no mention of the plug-in hybrid system so far, but a quick look at the Roewe RX5’s specifications point us in the direction of a 187kW/570Nm 1.5T system supported by a 12.3kWh lithium-ion battery delivering up to 61km of electric range (NEDC).
Those battery capacity and range numbers are both smaller than the current model’s 16.6kWh unit and the ADR-certified EV range of 63km.
This suggests the export-spec HS will pinch the plug-in system from the related Roewe D5X DMH, which has a bigger battery (21.4kWh) and a CLTC range of up to 135km, while the combustion engine is also milder at 110kW.
Regardless, the new HS measures 4655mm long, 1890mm wide, 1655mm tall and rides on a 2765mm wheelbase, making it noticeably bigger than its predecessor in every metric besides height.
Alloy wheel sizes will range between 18 and 19 inches depending on the variant.
