The replacement for the popular Mitsubishi ASX is shaping up with the release overnight of a series of shadowy teaser images that preview a near-production small SUV concept car targeting ASEAN markets.
No model name or technical details have been released with the pictures, but Mitsubishi has announced that it will officially unveil the car at the Indonesian motor show in August.
From the images, the concept also appears to be an updated version of the Mitsubishi XFC that debuted at the 2022 Vietnam motor show.
Sharing the same arrow-shaped headlights as the XFC, the new concept is closer to production and is expected to sprout a pair of conventional door mirrors and door handles and feature more realistic proportions in line with the small SUV class.
Inside, the cabin will also be toned down, but an evolution of the twin-screen layout that incorporates both the instrument panel and infotainment system is anticipated.
Mitsubishi says the SUV will also come equipped with a newly developed sound system from Yamaha.
The production version is expected to go on sale in the ASEAN region early next year.
Specific Aussie-market details are still to be confirmed, but Mitsubishi Australia is believed to be studying the potential for the ASEAN model to be upgraded to meet our higher safety standards and customer specification requirements.
In Europe, the Mitsubishi ASX has already been replaced with a reclothed version of the Renault Captur, however that car has not been produced for right-hand drive markets.
“We understand how important this segment is and how big an impact ASX has had on it for over a decade,” a Mitsubishi Australia spokesperson told carsales.
“MMC [in Japan] is also aware of this and we continue to look for a ‘best solution’ that will ensure we continue to be well represented in this market, alongside Eclipse Cross, however there is no firm decision on when the current ASX will be replaced here.”
