The third-generation 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan has finally made its global debut but is about 18 months away from launch in Australia, arriving early in 2025 and carrying a heavy emphasis on conventional petrol engines.
That petrol-centric line-up for VW’s all-important new five-seater mid-size SUV is expected to be topped by a new 195kW 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder – that is, before a new-generation Tiguan R emerges at a later date.
“The Volkswagen Tiguan will arrive in Australia in early 2025,” a spokesperson told carsales.



“Currently the flagship 162TSI and R make up almost 60 per cent of Tiguan sales, which continues to be a great vote of confidence in the product.
“We will focus on the new petrol offerings at the all-new Tiguan’s peak now with an exciting 195kW.”
For anyone thinking the new Tiguan looks a lot like the battery-electric Volkswagen ID.4, you’re right – the two models will be offered together in our market, covering both internal combustion (ICE) and EV sides of the medium SUV coin.
The EV influence is perhaps best reflected by the new Tiguan’s drastically improved drag coefficient (0.28Cd compared to the current 0.33Cd), which will help the new plug-in hybrid versions of the SUV – none of which are heading Down Under – achieve their claimed 100km EV-only range.


While Europe is making a big deal out of the new PHEV options, VW’s local operation is concentrating on traditional ICE and, where available, EV powertrains.
As previously reported, the new Tiguan rides on the same MQB Evo platform as the all-new Volkswagen Passat (which won’t be offered in Australia) and measures 4551mm long, 1939mm wide and 1659mm high, with a 2681mm wheelbase.
The slightly longer body frees up an extra 37 litres of boot space behind the second row (652L), while the tech-heavy cockpit hammers home the exterior’s new-generation vibe.
The cabin is dominated by a central infotainment screen spanning up to 15 inches depending on the grade and a digital instrument cluster, both of which run the latest MIB4 operating system which means faster response times, new graphics, menus and functions.
Other tech highlights include the availability of new ergoActive Plus massaging front seats, a variant-specific roll-out of the Golf GTI’s Vehicle Dynamics Manager, optional two-valve adaptive shock absorbers (DCC Pro), IQ.LIGHT HD Matrix headlights and a configurable head-up display.
