The all-new 2025 Audi Q5 is so close you can almost smell it, with an official reveal expected to take place in 2024 ahead of first Aussie deliveries as soon as late next year.
The current second-generation Audi Q5 first went on sale in 2017 and the release timing for its third-gen replacement has now firmed up significantly.
That’s according to Audi Australia director, Jeff Mannering, who says the German luxury auto brand’s new mid-size SUV will be something to celebrate.
“We haven't got the candles on the cake yet, but it'll come in the next 12 to 24 months,” he revealed to carsales.
The 2025 Audi Q5 will lock horns with the latest BMW X3 and the new-generation Mercedes-Benz GLC, which has just gone on sale Australia in just one model grade, the GLC 300.
Mannering wouldn’t be drawn on whether Audi Australia would follow Mercedes-Benz Australia with a condensed Q5 portfolio. Nor would he elaborate on vehicle specifics, such as powertrain options and new technical features.
However, given Audi’s catchcry (vorsprung durch technik) means advancement through technology, you can expect to see ever-wilder dancing OLED headlights and augmented reality systems than in current models.
“With all the different interior concepts and different design concepts that are coming, it’s an important time and you’ve got to get it right. Just because it’s a new car doesn’t mean it’s going to automatically be a great success,” he said of the new Q5.
“You’ve got to make it [a success] and you’ve got to do a lot of work behind the scenes.”
The new Q5 was spied wearing camouflage while undergoing cold-weather testing in 2022, but these unofficial renders from digital artist Nikita Chuiko via Russian website Kolesa.ru show how the new model could incorporate visual cues from the EV-only Audi Q4 e-tron that’s coming to Australia around mid-2024.
Mannering confirmed that the next couple of years will be ‘big’, with significant new-model launches expected to include a new Audi A4 and electric-only Audi A6.
“There's a lot of new products coming and some of our portfolio, they’re at the end of the lifecycle. It’s now the time that we start to bring the new ones, so it’s a really exciting time as a brand because it’s a busy time, it gives you a lot to do.”
The Audi Q5 is the brand’s second best selling model behind the Q3 and the third most popular model in the volume-selling mid-size luxury SUV category, behind the dominant Lexus NX and Mercedes-Benz GLC.
“[Q5] It’s really important because Australians love SUVs; it’s a medium-size SUV and if you look at the volume in the different segments, that one has been right on the money,” said Mannering.
The next-gen 2025 Audi Q5 is again expected to be joined a coupe-style Sportback version and will be the last Q5 offered with combustion engines, as the brand’s post-2030 vehicle development programs focus on electric powertrains.
Based on the spy photos, we know the new model will be slightly larger than the current Q5, with European sources suggesting we’ll see carryover petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
“It’s always going to be important,” added Mannering. “It’s going to be the right body style, the engine portfolios are going to be right, the interior space is going to be right and people are now looking for new designs.”
