New Alfa Romeo supercar confirmed

Chief designer confirms all-new flagship sports car inspired by classic 1967 Alfa 33 Stradale is in the works

Alfa Romeo design boss Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos has confirmed the Italian car-maker is working on a wild new supercar that will draw inspiration from the seminal 1967 Alfa 33 Stradale.

The flagship sports car is believed to be the already-teased 2024 Alfa Romeo 6C, but although Mesonero-Romanos said the all-new model would be inspired by the 33 Stradale, he didn’t explicitly link it to the 6C.

When asked if it was time for a 33 revival, Alfa Romeo’s vice-president for design replied simply: “Yes, we’re doing it.”

Mesonero-Romanos wouldn’t be drawn on providing further details but, as carsales has already reported, Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato has said the incoming 6C will “contribute to the DNA” of the brand and wouldn’t be reinvented with a radical new design.

Previously, Imparato also hinted that the reborn 6C will also feature a combustion engine, so it’s likely to bid farewell to Alfa’s twin-turbo V6.

Although no official details have been released, the 6C supercar is set to be based on a carbon-fibre monocoque tub and feature a mid-mounted combustion engine, just like the smaller Alfa Romeo 4C.

Packing a development of the Ferrari-derived 2.9-litre twin-turbo petrol V6, which in the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA produces 397kW and 600Nm, outputs should be wound up for the 6C.

Channelling the power to the rear wheels is expected to be the same Tremec eight-speed dual-clutch transmission that’s used in both the Maserati MC20 and the Chevrolet Corvette C8.

When it lands, the Alfa 6C will be the long-awaited replacement for the 8C Competizione supercar – the run of svelte coupes and Spider drop-tops sold from 2007 to 2010.

Even though the still-unseen Alfa Romeo 6C is still weeks away from being revealed, the limited run of cars was said to have been almost sold out back in February 2023…
