Audi Australia has priced the 2022 Audi S8 from $273,400 plus on-road costs, with the revitalised high-performance flagship sedan donning a new look, more gear and enhanced technology all-round.
That new asking price is $13,523 higher than the previous S8 available Down Under, but Audi justifies some of the increase through the standard inclusion of digital Matrix LED headlights, as seen on the Audi e-tron S.
Housed in a narrower cluster, the new lighting system is complemented by the ‘night vision assist’ driver aid which can detect animals, obstacles or potential hazards on the roadside before the driver is able to see them.
Digital OLED tail-lights are also fitted standard at the rear-end, bearing a unique design and including different ‘characters’ that adjust automatically depending on the driving mode selected.
The rear lights also have a proximity indication feature that increase illumination in conjunction with the car’s driver assist systems.
Now arriving in showrooms, the new 2022 Audi S8 – which we drove in Germany alongside the updated A8, which is due later this year – introduces a variety of other detail changes including a bigger redesigned grille with Y-shaped mesh (replacing the previous model’s landscape slats), extra intakes and chunkier contouring all-round.
At the rear there’s also a new bumper design with protruding quad-oval exhaust tips and a contrasting diffuser.
Rolling stock comes in the form of 21-inch Y-spoked alloy wheels, behind which lurk red S-branded brake callipers.
The S8 continues to be powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 (with mild-hybrid assistance) that develops an unchanged 420kW and 800Nm of torque.
It drives all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, and can send the S8 from 0-100km/h in just 3.8 seconds. Top speed is an electronically governed 250km/h.
A camera and sensor-based ‘predictive active suspension’ system takes care of bump absorption, however the springs themselves are air units capable of lifting one side of the vehicle or another depending on the cornering forces.
Agility is further aided by the standard all-wheel steering system and quattro sport rear differential.
Headline items in the cabin carry over from the previous model and include a 23-speaker B&O sound system, wireless smartphone mirroring, Audi virtual cockpit plus, head-up display, Valcona leather upholstery, and carbon vector and dark brushed aluminium trim.
The front seats have heating, ventilation and massage functions, complemented by heated arm rests.
Being a limousine, rear seat passengers are also well catered for with power-adjustable and heated outboard seats, a panoramic roof and electric blinds, to name a few key features.
