New Ford Mondeo: More specs and details

Blue oval's all-new midsizer will usher in sportier styling but is still at least a year away

Ford has revealed more specs and details for the next-gen Mondeo, the local launch of which isn’t expected to occur until early 2015. That's a full three years after its US-focused Fusion sibling was revealed at the 2012 Detroit motor show.

It’s not yet known whether the Mondeo we’re destined to get will be a facelifted version of the vehicle pictured here, but what we do know is that the car measures 4869mm long, 1852mm wide and 1476mm tall – about the same size as the current model. That said, it sits around 40mm lower, endowing it with a sportier profile.

The new sedan’s styling is an embodiment of Ford’s Kinetic design language, with the grille and headlights drawing inspiration from the Evos concept.

The latest-gen Mondeo will also usher in a better quality cabin kitted out with soft-touch plastics and fabrics on the dash and doors.

A wagon version will also be offered in Europe, along with a premium Mondeo Vignale variant that will be pitched against entry-level versions of the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C-Class and Audi A4.

The Mondeo’s powertrain line-up will include a new 1.5-litre Ecoboost petrol engine, which serves up similar horsepower and torque figures to Ford’s current 1.6-litre EcoBoost in its lower state of tune (110kW and 240Nm respectively), while consuming less fuel in the process.

The European-spec Mondeo will also be offered with a 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost engine, and this model will be one of the cleanest and most frugal cars in its class.

Also on the menu (at least in Europe) is the option of a traditional hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. The former will be badged simply Mondeo Hybrid, but the plug-in will wear Mondeo Energi badges.

The plug-in Energi and Hybrid both share a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, but the Energi comes with a larger battery pack, enabling it cover around 30km solely on electric power.

European buyers will be able to choose between a six-speed manual gearbox and an optional dual-clutch six-speed Powershift transmission, and all-wheel-drive will also be offered in that market with one or more of the diesel models.
