New Ford Ranger promises clever storage and lighting solutions

Ford has revealed some of the more utilitarian details about the highly-anticipated new 2022 Ford Ranger.

Ahead of the all-new Australian-developed ute range’s local release by June, Ford says the next-generation ‘T6.2’ Ranger will go “all-out with a wider cargo box packed with features and opportunities to transform the space”.

While Ford continues to remain mum on powertrain details for the new Ranger line-up – which is expected to be topped by the Bronco Raptor’s 300kW twin-turbo 3.0-litre petrol V6 for the new Ranger Raptor due for reveal next month the latest details make for good reading if you’re planning to work out of or head bush in Ford’s new global mid-size pick-up.

Dual-cab versions of the next Ranger ute, which was developed alongside the second-generation Volkswagen Amarok due in 2023, are claimed to deliver class-leading volume of 1233 litres, together with an easy-lift tailgate with built-in ruler, 12V power outlet and zone lighting that can be controlled via the infotainment system or the FordPass smartphone app.

With a body that’s 50mm wider than before, the new Ranger’s tub will accommodate a standard European pallet (1200x800mm), while the tray length runs from 1544mm to 2305mm depending on the variant, says Ford.

The zone lighting function is designed to appeal to recreational types by employing a combination of the headlights, puddle lamps, numberplate lamps and box lighting to illuminate a 360-degree area around the truck, or specific areas.

“It is perfect for safely inspecting the area around the vehicle at night,” says Ford.

Meantime, premium Wildtrak grades will be fitted with adjustable tie-down rails like those seen on the Nissan Navara, offering up to nine different positions from which to secure cargo.

This is in addition to six separate tie-down points located in the bed and a powered roller shutter as seen on outgoing Wildtrak grades.

Ranger vehicles fitted with a factory tray will offer a neat rear access step located behind the back wheels, along with divider locaters allowing customers to section off areas of the tray.

All variants are set to mirror their improved tray capabilities with additional interior versatility, including a redesign of rear under-seat storage space and a rear seat back that stows flat if needed.

Ford says the 2022 Ranger will be compatible with roof-top platform mounts capable of carrying up to 350kg (static), opening the door to a slew of accessories first promoted by the car-maker’s Australian arm back December.

“Customers can personalise their next-gen Ranger with a range of as many as 600 factory-backed work, urban and adventure accessories, depending on the market,” Ford.

“And for those owners looking to make their next-gen Ranger adventure ready, the team made sure to create a space in the engine bay for a dual battery set-up.

“This optional accessory kit will enable new owners to add an auxiliary battery to power their fridges, lighting, tools and other electrical gadgets without draining their main battery.”
