New-generation 2024 Honda Accord set for Australia

Honda’s new flagship sedan set to be approved for local roads, which means an official announcement shouldn’t be far off

The new-generation 2024 Honda Accord looks set for Australian release after all, following the upcoming mid-size sedan’s appearance in the federal government’s vehicle homologation database.

The first hint of the new flagship sedan’s pending approval for Australian roads comes in the form of the updated model designation: ‘ACCORD 4DR SED 80’.

We know this refers to the new Accord because the current model is listed as the ‘ACCORD 4DR SED 70’ and the new-generation Accord has just been launched in Japan, roughly a year after it was launched in North America.

Australian-delivered Accord models have traditionally been sourced from Japan, where the new Accord will only be sold with a hybrid powertrain, and it’s almost certain to be the same case here.

The local future of Honda’s 11th-generation Accord has been subject to a turbulent run of yes-no-maybes pre-dating its reveal in November last year by about six months.

To quickly recap the saga, former Honda Australia director Stephen Collins told carsales in May 2022 the new Accord was locked and loaded for our market and would “still very much play a role” in the brand’s local line-up as a flagship technology leader.

However, things looked a little less certain when the model was reveal six months later, with Honda Australia hesitant to discuss anything to do with the famed nameplate – including its local market introduction, which had previously been set for the end of 2023.

Nothing had changed as of September this year, when the Japanese (right-hook) version of the new Accord was revealed to the world, with Honda Australia’s PR department declaring it “cannot confirm the arrival of the new model Accord to the Australian market at this time”.

But now we have evidence it is undertaking the costly Australian Design Rule certification process, Honda Australia should soon be in a position to confirm the new Accord for local release – probably in 2024.

That’s later than previously expected, but odds are the new Accord’s homologation data – including powertrains and trim levels – will be published shortly, in the lead-up to an official price and spec announcement.
