Hyundai has launched its fourth-generation Santa Fe in Australia this week, priced from $43,000 plus on-road costs.
That’s $2010 more than the cheapest version of the outgoing Hyundai Santa Fe range (the discontinued Santa Fe Active X), but still less than rivals like the Mazda CX-9 (from $43,890) and top-selling Toyota Kluger (from $44,500).
Larger than before and bringing more equipment and safety technologies, the family-sized seven-seat SUV will initially be offered only with the choice of traverse-mounted four-cylinder petrol and turbo-diesel engines matched to automatic transmissions and Hyundai’s revised HTRAC all-wheel drive system as standard.
Front-wheel drive, turbo-petrol and V6 petrol versions are yet to be confirmed for the Australian market, despite being offered previously.
Depending on the grade – Active, Elite or Highlander – the Santa Fe is equipped with either a 7.0-inch or 8.0-inch ‘floating’ colour infotainment array with standard AM/FM radio, Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity and voice recognition.
An Infinity premium audio system with satellite-navigation and live traffic updates is included with Elite and Highlander variants, as is dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and ignition, and powered front seats.
Highlander variants add a head-up display, heated and ventilated front seats with memory function, heated outboard rear seats, heated steering wheel, digital instrument panel, wireless smartphone charging and LED foglights, headlights, running lamps and tail-lights.
A connected smartphone app known as Auto Link — providing a suite of driving information, vehicle maintenance, parking management and remote control functions — is also available.
Perhaps the biggest news for family buyers, however, is the uptick in standard safety equipment, even if it comes with price hikes of up to $4410 at top Highlander level.
All grades now receive Hyundai’s Smart Sense electronic safety suite providing autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist detection, active cruise control with stop and go, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic avoidance assistance, driver attention warning, high-beam assist and lane-keeping assist.
The usual electronic chassis controls join six airbags and tyre pressure monitoring as standard across the three-model range, so too a segment-first rear-seat alert system to advise drivers if children or pets have been left in the car.
Highlander variants also add a 360-degree camera and self-parking technology, while Active and Elite models receive a reversing camera as standard. Active models are fitted with rear parking sensors, while Elite and Highlander grades gain front sensors as part of the deal.
All Hyundai passenger vehicles are backed by a fully transferable lifetime capped-price servicing deal, five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty with up to 10 years’ roadside assistance and sat-nav map updates, and included roadside assistance.
“The 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe is an eye-catching and technologically advanced new-generation model that has grown into a family favourite over four generations and almost two decades on the market,” said Hyundai Motor Company Australia CEO, JW Lee.
“Santa Fe delivers a long list of cutting-edge active safety features as standard across the range, powerful and efficient petrol and turbo-diesel engines, handsome styling, family-friendly versatility, and value for money, with a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty and Lifetime Service Plan.”
“[The] Santa Fe is an advanced, safe and stylish SUV to complement an active family lifestyle,” Lee concluded.
Hyundai Australia has sold 73,113 examples of the Santa Fe since launching its first seven-seat SUV back in 2000, including 2749 examples to May this year.
That accounts for six per cent of the large SUV segment, which Toyota dominates with its popular LandCruiser Prado (7580) and Kluger (5795) forming a combined 29 per cent share.
Behind Toyota but ahead of the Santa Fe is the Subaru Outback (4538), Mazda CX-9 (3436), Isuzu MU-X (3329) and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (2754).
