Maserati has released the first official teaser image of the 2023 Maserati GranCabrio as pre-production prototypes take to the street of Modena in the first phase of their real-world testing program.
Confirmed by the trident brand to be launching globally sometime next year – most likely in the second half – the new GranCabrio will be offered in both internal combustion and battery-electric ‘Folgore’ guises – just like the new Maserati GranTurismo line-up.
Internal combustion power will come courtesy of a twin-turbo 3.0-litre petrol V6, while the EV version will sport three electric motors and what’s sure to be supercar-baiting performance.
The shadowy teaser image doesn’t reveal much about the car’s design save for its fabric roof and rear lighting signature, but the GranTurismo coupe has already been revealed in full and forms the basis of the drop-top – just erase the roof and you get the idea.
All-wheel drive is also a shoo-in for all variants, as is an eight-speed automatic transmission and an almost three-metre wheelbase.
Perhaps the biggest discrepancy between the GranTurismo and GranCabrio will be the seating arrangements and capacities; Maserati will sell the coupe as a genuine four-seater thanks to its sloping roofline, whereas the convertible looks to have lost some of that rear seat accommodation… at least going by the teaser image.
We expect then the GranCabrio to be pitched as a cloth-top 2+2 as opposed to a proper four-seater.
“To follow the resurgence of the GranTurismo legend… the prototype [GranCabrio] models are undergoing intensive testing on the road, on the track and in various usage conditions, aimed at gathering essential data for optimal final tuning,” said Maserati.
Given the GranTurismo isn’t expected to land on Aussie soil until the closing stages of next year, it’d be reasonable to expect the GranCabrio to follow the coupe by roughly 12 months, suggesting a late 2024 or even early 2025 arrival Down Under.
