New Mazda3 sedan surfaces

First image of Mazda's redesigned 3 sedan surfaces ahead of official reveal next week

The replacement for Australia’s top-selling model was revealed last week in five-door hatchback form and now the first image of the new Mazda3 sedan has surfaced online ahead of its official reveal in North America next week.

Mazda has not confirmed the authenticity of the unofficial image, but it appears consistent with the sedan in images leaked last October and indicates the new Mazda3 four-door will share the same rear-end design theme as the latest Mazda6 mid-size sedan.

Both new Mazda3 bodystyles will go on sale in Australia next February – around the same time as Toyota’s redesigned Corolla sedan -- meaning the existing model will do battle with the newer Corolla hatch (and a bevy of new small-car entrants, including the Volkswagen Golf, Nissan Pulsar and Hyundai i30) until then.

As we’ve reported, a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine will join 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre SKYACTIV petrol engines in the new Mazda3, echoing the latest Mazda6 and CX-5 engine line-ups.

However, a replacement for the Mazda3 MPS hot hatch has been ruled out for now, while Mazda’s first hybrid model -- a rotary-powered plug-in hybrid range-extender using Toyota Prius technology – will go on sale in Japan next year but won’t be seen here for at least two years.
