New Mercedes-Benz GLA revealed as SUV twin to the electric CLA

The all-new Mercedes-Benz GLA has been revealed, ushering in a new era for the German brand's best-selling small SUV with electric power, a larger footprint and a technology suite centred around artificial intelligence and connected-car functionality.

Launching first with three battery-electric variants, the new GLA promises up to 657 kilometres of claimed driving range and ultra-fast charging capabilities thanks to its new 800-volt electrical architecture. Electrified petrol-powered variants will join the range from early 2027.  

The GLA's significance extends beyond the premium small SUV segment. As Mercedes-Benz's best-selling compact vehicle globally, it represents one of the brand's most significant tests yet of whether mainstream luxury buyers are prepared to embrace EV-first platforms, cloud-connected software and AI-powered vehicle experiences.

The most interesting aspect of the new GLA may be what sits underneath it.

While Mercedes-Benz has not explicitly detailed platform sharing in its reveal materials, the GLA's battery sizes, charging architecture, software ecosystem, AI functionality and electric drivetrains closely mirror those introduced by the recently launched CLA range. That suggests the SUV will benefit from the same next-generation technologies underpinning Mercedes-Benz's latest electric sedan strategy.  

Mercedes-Benz claims a maximum WLTP driving range of 657 kilometres and says the 800-volt architecture can recover up to 270 kilometres of driving range in 10 minutes at a compatible fast charger. The SUV also grows in size, with additional passenger room and a larger cargo area than its predecessor.

Inside, the optional MBUX Superscreen combines a 10.25-inch driver display with dual 14-inch screens, while the latest MBUX Virtual Assistant uses artificial intelligence from ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing and Google Gemini to answer questions, control vehicle functions and provide recommendations.

The increasingly connected nature of modern vehicles is also becoming a focus for regulators and privacy advocates. Mercedes-Benz says the GLA's AI-powered systems can access information from multiple sources, including navigation, charging and parking data, while connected services help optimise route planning and other vehicle functions.

As manufacturers introduce more sophisticated software and always-on connectivity, consumer advocates are calling for stronger privacy protections governing how vehicle-generated information is collected, stored and used in Australia.

Orders for the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLA open today in Europe, ahead of initial deliveries in November. Electrified combustion-powered variants are scheduled to join the line-up in early 2027. Mercedes-Benz Australia is yet to announce local timing, though an Australian launch is expected to be confirmed soon, with the new small SUV likely to arrive during the first half of 2027.

Replacing the model launched in 2019, the all-new GLA introduces Mercedes-Benz's latest EV, software and AI technologies to one of the company's most important global nameplates.

The new model also provides one of the clearest indications yet of where Mercedes-Benz's broader compact-car range is heading. With the CLA, GLA and future derivatives expected to share major electrical, software and powertrain components, the brand appears to be moving towards a more unified model family that can support both electric and hybrid powertrains.

Mercedes-Benz Australia is yet to announce local pricing, though the close relationship between the GLA and CLA suggests the SUV could attract a modest premium over equivalent CLA electric variants when it arrives locally. That would position it against rivals such as the BMW iX1, Audi Q4 e-tron and Volvo EX40.
