New Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV locked in

Seven seats for the first time, more power and longer range for incoming new plug-in hybrid SUV

The incoming new-generation 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has been previewed ahead of the plug-in hybrid mid-size SUV’s launch in Australia early next year.

Following in the wheel tracks of the fourth-generation Mitsubishi Outlander that is due to touch down in Australia in the final quarter of this year, the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will offer a longer electric range and improved efficiency over the first iteration that’s been on sale since 2014.

Mitsubishi has also today confirmed that the Outlander PHEV will be offered in seven-seat configuration for the first time, ensuring it will be among the first three-row plug-in hybrid SUVs from a mainstream brand in Australia, joining the incoming Kia Sorento PHEV and Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV that are both due late this year.

Technical specifications for the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV are still to be released, with the Japanese car-maker saying only that it will offer “improved motor output and increased battery capacity over the current model”.

The company also claims the new PHEV “delivers more powerful road performance and greater driving range”.

The current Outlander PHEV combines a 94kW/199Nm 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors – 60kW/137Nm up front and 70kW/195Nm at the rear.

It delivers a combined-cycle fuel efficiency rating of 1.9L/100km and an official EV range of 55km.

“Based on the newly developed platform, integrated components and an optimised layout allow the new model to accommodate seven passengers in three rows, offering a new level of comfort and utility in an SUV,” the company said.

The fourth-generation Outlander rides on a new platform shared with the upcoming Nissan X-TRAIL that has a 36mm-longer (2706mm) wheelbase and, according to Mitsubishi, employs “ultra-high tensile strength steel sheet with hot stamping around the cabin to create a high-strength cabin structure with little deformation while also achieving weight reduction”.

The new plug-on hybrid Outlander will bolster Mitsubishi’s burgeoning electrified vehicle range, with the smaller Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV arriving next month.
