New Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV scores five-star safety

The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has been awarded a five-star ANCAP safety rating ahead of its arrival Down Under later this year.

Set to touch down in local showrooms in the third quarter, the PHEV joins the regular Mitsubishi Outlander model range that’s already on sale with a high level of safety equipment and a maximum rating under ANCAP’s current tough testing regime.

For the Outlander PHEV to achieve the same rating, two additional crash tests were conducted – a frontal offset and oblique pole test – to confirm the structural integrity of the plug-in hybrid’s battery and electrical systems.

“Earlier this year we saw the new Mitsubishi Outlander enter the market with a five-star ANCAP safety rating,” said ANCAP chief executive Carla Hoorweg.

“We’ve now conducted two additional crash tests specifically on PHEV variants and confirmed comparable levels of safety performance. This is an important rating for fleets and the market more generally.

“Alternative-powered models and variants are growing in popularity – particularly given the recent rise in fuel prices,” she added.

All Outlander models, including the PHEV, carry the same scores across ANCAP’s four main areas of assessment, including an impressive 92 per cent for child occupant protection.

The new-generation mid-size SUV also scored well for adult occupant protection and vulnerable road user protection (both 81%), as well as Safety Assist (83%). 

Every MY22 Outlander variant comes standard with autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, lane assist, driver attention assist, emergency stop sign function, hill descent control, trailer stability assist and more.
