Ten years after the quirky Nissan JUKE premiered in Geneva, the new second-generation compact SUV will launch in Australia early next month priced from just under $28,000.
The all-new 2020 Nissan JUKE renews its attack on the likes of the Mazda CX-3 (from $22,710), Mitsubishi ASX ($23,990) and Hyundai Kona ($24,300) with a fresh new look, more efficient engines, more interior space and upgraded technology and luxury.
But the Nissan JUKE is now priced significantly higher than most of its rivals and there are no all-wheel drive models – it's exclusively front-drive now.
Previously priced from $23,490, the new Nissan JUKE has gone up in price by $4500 but has shifted upmarket with higher equipment levels and an efficient petrol engine, more in line with the Toyota C-HR ($29,540) compact SUV's positioning.
All four Nissan JUKE model grades are fitted with a large 8.0-inch touch-screen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The standard equipment list across all four Nissan JUKE variants (ST, ST+, ST-L, Ti) also includes automatic LED headlights and tail-lights, along with signature Y-shaped daytime running lights, 17-inch alloy wheels, eight colour choices and a five-star ANCAP safety rating.Standard safety tech includes airbags that cover front and rear seats, autonomous emergency braking (with pedestrian and cyclist detection), lane departure warning and traffic sign detection systems. There's even a brake-based intelligent lane intervention system, rear parking sensors and camera, blind spot warning, driver alert and rear cross-traffic alert systems fitted as standard.
All models except the base Nissan JUKE ST come with TomTom satellite navigation and live traffic data, while up-spec ST-L and Ti come with a 7.0-inch digitised instrument cluster and ambient LED cabin lighting.
JUKE ST-L and all models above it also get front parking sensors, a surround-view 360-degree camera system with moving object detection and adaptive cruise control that can accelerate and brake the vehicle autonomously.
Nissan says upgraded cabin materials, specifically soft-touch dash plastics, add a 'premium' feel. Although a wireless phone charger doesn't appear on the equipment list of any model, USB and 12-volt charge points up front will be welcome.
Comfort levels have been improved by the fitment of larger 'Monoform' cushions for all 2020 Nissan JUKE model-grades, designed to provide "…improved spinal and lumbar support over longer journeys", says Nissan.
The top-spec Ti models differentiate themselves by adding an tyre pressure monitoring system and an eight-speaker Bose audio set-up that includes a pair of Bose 'UltraNearfield' speakers integrated into the front seat headrests.
Top-spec ST-L models get part leather accented seats while the JUKE Ti comes with fancy-looking quilted leather trim upholstery with Alcantara (read: suede) accents.
All four Nissan JUKE grades are powered by a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol three-cylinder engine (84kW/180Nm) hooked up to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Steering wheel paddle shifters are standard on all models.
Nissan reckons the new turbo engine delivers 'engaging performance' along with low fuel consumption of 5.8L/100km, which is helped by an engine idle-stop system. As previously reported, the new Nissan JUKE is longer, wider and taller than before, which affords more room for occupants and increases boot space by 16 per cent, from 354 litres to 422 litres. With the rear seats folded down space opens to 1305 litres.
Like all of the Japanese brand's vehicles, the Nissan JUKE comes with a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty backed up with five years of 24-hour roadside assistance. A capped-price servicing program also runs for six years.
While the exterior design isn't as weird as its predecessor's, the second-generation Nissan JUKE is still a 'disruptive' product, says Nissan Australia boss Stephen Lester.
"The all-new JUKE is a further example of Nissan disrupting automotive conventions, as we did with the launch of original JUKE in 2010," said Lester.
"With its impressive new engine, incredible fuel efficiency and wealth of safety equipment, the all-new JUKE is a small SUV like no other. It has certainly grown up, but it has also lost none of the youthful excitement that the JUKE name is famous for."The two top-selling compact SUVs in Australia thus far in 2020 are the Mitsubishi ASX with 4594 sales and the Mazda CX-3 with 4106 sales. The Nissan JUKE found just 88 customers to the end of April 2020 -- down more than 50 per cent on the year before as stock levels dried up before the arrival of the new model.
