New Nissan X-TRAIL: Aussie details revealed

The new-generation Nissan X-TRAIL will be gunning for the Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5 when it arrives in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2022 – from around October – with four model grades on offer and one engine option to begin with.

First previewed by the US-market Nissan Rogue in mid-2020 and then shown in X-TRAIL guise in early 2021, the 2022 Nissan X-TRAIL will galvanise the Japanese brand’s SUV line-up when it launches alongside the all-new Pathfinder and QASHQAI that are also due in the final quarter.

Looking the goods with a stylish new design and fitted with a range of modern technology thanks to a new platform architecture (CMF-C) it shares with the Mitsubishi Outlander, the more powerful fourth-generation Nissan X-TRAIL mid-size SUV can also tow more.

Maximum braked towing capacity has increased from 1500kg to 2000kg.

A revised 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine pumps 135kW of power and 245Nm of torque (+9kW/19Nm) through an updated X-tronic continuously variable automatic transmission, driving either the front wheels or all four wheels if AWD is optioned.

An e-POWER petrol-electric hybrid powertrain with 140kW/330Nm is all but certain to slot in under the X-TRAIL’s edgy new bonnet down the track.

Other headline features of the new X-TRAIL include split-level LED headlights, splash-free windscreen wipers that squirt water through the wiper arms, multi-link rear suspension and several family-friendly features, such as 90-degree-opening rear doors and four USB ports – two up front and two in the rear.

Safety systems like adaptive cruise control and rear parking sensors are also standard on all model grades.

There’s no pricing yet – that will come closer to launch – and no sign of a seven-seat body style.

Four model grades will be offered in Australia – ST, ST-L, Ti and Ti-L – and while pricing won’t be announced until closer to launch, the 2022 Nissan X-TRAIL is expected to be pricier than the current model’s $30,665 to $46,115 spread.

On the outside, the entry-level Nissan X-TRAIL ST comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, automatic LED headlights with high beam assist, LED tail-lights and rear parking sensors.

Inside, the ST gets an 8.0-inch central touch-screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, rear parking camera, electric park brake, paddle shifters and automatic climate control.

A comprehensive safety suite includes autonomous emergency braking (AEB) that operates in forward and reverse gears, rear cross traffic alert, traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, a front centre airbag and intelligent emergency lane keep with lane intervention and blind spot monitoring.

The Nissan X-TRAIL ST-L gets all of the above and adds 18-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 360-degree surround-view parking camera, plus a few family-friendly features like sliding rear seats and tinted windows.

The ProPilot semi-autonomous driving system adds lane keep assist, while front parking sensors and synthetic leather trim are also included.

The high-series X-TRAIL Ti features 19-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, leather seat upholstery, wireless phone charger, wireless Apple CarPlay, LED turn signals, a digital rear-view mirror, three-zone climate control and a power-operated tailgate.

The Ti also brings out the digital screen big guns, with a 12.3-inch driver’s display, 12.3-inch central touch-screen (with sat-nav) and 10.8-inch head-up display.

The flagship Nissan X-TRAIL Ti-L delivers an up-scale cabin experience with quilted Nappa leather seats with memory function, a 10-speaker Bose sound system, heated steering wheel, heated rear seats and rear window sun shades.

The Ti-L also has a remote engine start function.

All-wheel drive models will have selectable modes for regular roads, dirt, snow, ice and so on. There’s also a hill descent control system along with Sport, Eco and standard powertrain modes.
