Peugeot has a new range-opener in Australia in the form of the all-new 208 hatchback, which will formally go on sale at the Sydney Motor Show on October 19, priced from $18,490 plus on-road costs.
The entry price represents a $500 saving over the outgoing 207 1.4 XR and applies to the 208 Active 1.2 five-door, powered by a three-cylinder petrol engine that is matched only to a five-speed manual transmission.
Next in the 208 line-up - which comprises two body styles, three petrol engines, four equipment grades and two transmissions – is the Active 1.6 five-door, which comes only with a four-speed automatic transmission and costs $21,490.
Priced $500 higher at $21,990 is the Allure 1.6 five-door manual, which is also available in four-speed auto guise for an extra $2000 ($23,990) and will be the volume-selling 208 variant. Commanding a further $3000 premium is the more highly specified Allure Premium 1.6 auto at $26,490.
Topping the 208 range at the same price ($26,490) is the three-door Allure Sport, which is powered by a 115kW/260Nm 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine matched exclusively to a six-speed manual gearbox.
Taking the new 208 line-up further upstream next June will be the GTi three-door, but there will be no diesel or wagon versions of Peugeot’s new baby in Australia. The entry-level 1.2-litre VTi petrol triple delivers 60kW and 118Nm and returns combined fuel consumption of just 4.7L/100km and emits 109g/km of CO2. The fitment of an idle-stop function is claimed to reduce CO2 emissions to 95g/km.
All four 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol models produce 88kW/160Nm and the manual consumes 5.8L/100km and emits 134g/km – the same figures achieved by the more powerful top-shelf 1.6 turbo-petrol Allure Sport.
The latter’s claimed 0-100km/h acceleration figure drops from 13.9 seconds for the 1.2, 11.9 seconds for the 1.6 auto and 9.9 seconds for the 1.6 manual to 8.1 seconds, while top speed increases to 215km/h – up from 175km/h (1.2) and 190km/h (1.6).
Aside from its compact dimensions and cheeky new exterior design, Peugeot says the 208’s biggest change is its ‘reinvented driving position’ and redesigned interior, which is claimed to set a new benchmark for premium light cars as well as offering class-leading ergonomics.
All models will come highly specified, including a best-in-class seven-inch colour touch-screen infotainment system with six speakers and Bluetooth with USB connectivity.
Standard safety equipment includes six airbags, electronic stability and traction control, ABS brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and emergency brake assist, front seatbelt pre-tensioners and force-limiters, automatic hazard light activation, LED ‘boomerang’ tail-lights, five three-point seatbelts and five height-adjustable head restraints.
Also standard across the range is automatic door locking, remote central locking, cruise control with speed limiter, power windows, power/heated mirrors, a height/reach-adjustable steering wheel, air-conditioning, trip computer, driver’s seat height adjustment and a 60/40-split-folding rear seatback.
In addition, apart from a larger 1.6-litre engine, Allure variants will offer 16-inch alloy wheels (in lieu of the Active’s 15-inch steel wheels), front foglights, LED daytime running lights, dual-zone climate-control air-conditioning, rear parking sensors, automatic headlights and wipers, a colour multi-function digital display, front centre armrest, illuminated vanity mirrors, a leather-clad steering wheel and sports front seats with Maille cloth trim.
Stepping up to the Allure Premium brings Mariot leather/cloth trim, 17-inch alloys, a panoramic glass ‘Cielo’ sunroof with blind and mood lighting, gloss black interior door trims, cornering lights, an ‘SR1’ bar grille with dark chrome surround (instead of lesser models’ honeycomb grille with aluminium surround) and rear privacy glass.
Apart from two fewer door for a sleeker look and turbo-petrol performance, the Allure Sport flagship adds to this dual chromed exhaust outlets, a rear spoiler, a unique sports grille, Tempke cloth upholstery, blue-lit instrument panel, aluminium gear knob and drilled sports pedals.
Options will include metallic paint and a $1500 pack comprising leather seat and handbrake trim, heated front seats and aluminium door sills.
The 208 will join other Peugeot passenger cars in coming with a capped-price service plan, which costs $270 for each of three services for the first 60,000km, totalling $810 over three years.
Peugeot said it expects the 208’s unique interior and exterior styling and value for money to attract a broader range of buyers than before, with about 1800 sales expected per annum – up from 600-700 annual examples of the 207 it replaces. It forecasts the 208 to attract a younger audience than the 207, split evenly between males and females aged between 30 and 40 – although the three-door Allure Sport will appeal to younger male buyers.
Despite being smaller externally than the 207, the 208 offers more rear passenger and cargo space, and measures 3962mm long (70mm shorter), 1739mm wide (20mm narrower) and 1460mm high (10mm lower).
Luggage space increases by 15 litres to 311 litres, expanding to 1152 litres with the rear seats folded. With a base kerb weight of just 975kg the 208 is some 114kg lighter than the 207 model for model, while the entry-level 1.2 Active manual is a big 173kg lighter than the outgoing 207 1.4.
Weight savings were achieved in all areas, while the new three-pot is 21kg lighter and 25 per cent more efficient than the 207’s 1.4. Apart from its downsized engines and body, Peugeot says 25 per cent of the 208 is made from recycled materials (up from seven per cent with the 207), including – in a world-first - its bumpers, radiator frame and fan.
