Peugeot Australia has announced full pricing and specifications for the all-new Peugeot 508 range, including the Sportswagon variant.
Pricing for the Peugeot 508 Fastback was confirmed earlier in the year at $53,990 (before on-road costs), and now the French brand has revealed pricing for the wagon, which will command a $2000 premium at $55,990 plus ORCs.
Each body style is available solely in GT spec and powered by a 165kW/300Nm 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, matched exclusively to a new eight-speed Aisin automatic transmission driving the front wheels.
Lighter, lower and shorter than its predecessor, while offering more cabin space, extra technology and improved fuel economy of just 6.3L/100km, the Peugeot 508 Fastback takes a claimed 8.1 seconds to hit 100km/h (8.2sec for the Sportwagon).
A host of safety equipment comes standard, including autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, driver attention alert, adaptive cruise control and front/rear parking sensors.
A Focal 10-speaker sound system is on board, as is a 10-inch infotainment unit with smartphone mirroring, digital radio, Bluetooth and navigation.
Peugeot’s i-Cockpit is also fitted, comprising a smaller steering wheel, 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and head-up display.
Two-tone 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels are are also standard for both models, along with tinted windows, twin exhaust outlets and GT emblems in satin copper on the rear doors. Sportswagon variants add roof rails as standard.
Options for both body styles include an opening panoramic sunroof ($2500) and eight special paint colours -- six metallic ($590) and two pearlescent ($1050). Hurricane grey is a no-cost option.
The French newcomer’s circa-$55,000 positioning is significantly up on its predecessor’s sub-$40K starting price and down on the old 508 GT.
However, it undercuts the entry price of all other mid-size prestige cars available, including the Audi A4 (from $56,100), BMW 3 Series ($64,900), Genesis G70 ($59,300), Infiniti Q50 ($54,900), Jaguar XE ($65,670), Lexus IS 300 ($59,340), Mercedes-Benz C-Class ($63,700), Tesla Model 3 ($66,000), Volkswagen Arteon $67,490) and the upcoming Volvo S60 ($54,990).
There’s no sign yet of a 300kW all-wheel drive version of the new 508, as previewed by the Sport Engineered sports sedan concept, which Peugeot has vowed to produce.
Peugeot Australia managing director Ben Farlow said the new Peugeot 508, isn’t just a new vehicle in its design, but also in its thinking, engineering and intent.
“The Peugeot 508 arrives at a time when the sedan segment is ripe for a shake-up. Not only is the 508 outstanding value, it’s great to look at, great to drive and it stands out in its class,” he said.
The 2019 Peugeot 508 line-up is on sale now and comes with a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, five-year roadside assist plan and the manufacturer’s Service Price Promise program.
