The new Peugeot 508 has made its public debut in Australia, for which pricing and preliminary specifications for the redesigned mid-size sedan have been released ahead of its release in September.
Adopting a new burger-with-the-lot philosophy, Peugeot Australian will make the 2019 508 sedan solely available in a high-spec GT trim, priced from $53,990 (plus on-road costs).
At that money, the liftback will do battle with the Volkswagen Arteon and Skoda Superb, along with entry-level models from Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz – the most notable example being the Audi A4, which starts at $56,100.
The newcomer is also $10,000 more than the vehicle it replaces.
Peugeot will release the complete specification rundown closer to launch, however, at this stage it says the 508 will be fully loaded with equipment, offering users Nappa leather upholstery with massaging front seats, LED lighting front and rear, automatic tailgate, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 10-inch touch-screen with sat-nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
On the safety front, the 508 GT will be fitted with a semi-autonomous highway assistance mode that incorporates adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist functions.
In fact, Peugeot Australia says the only available options will be premium paint and an opening glass roof.
Under the bonnet, the Peugeot 508 GT will be powered by a 167kW/300Nm 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that drives the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic.
The GT will ride standard on adaptive dampers and is based on the same EMP2 architecture that underpins the popular Peugeot 308.
The 508 employs a sleek silhouette punctuated by frameless doors and intricate rear tail-lights; a clear signal Peugeot wants to pitch it upstream of the regular Mazda6 and Toyota Camry.
Inside, the upmarket vibe continues with the fourth generation of Peugeot’s iCockpit display along with a premium Focal audio system.
Before the end of the year, the sleek 508 liftback will be joined by the 508 GT Touring, a wagon variant that is expected to command a circa-$3000 price premium.
