New Porsche 911 GTS revealed and priced

Mid-performance variant of 992-generation Porsche 911 offers more power and the option of a manual

Porsche Cars Australia has revealed full details and pricing for the highly-anticipated 2022 Porsche 911 GTS – the new middling performance variant of the car-maker’s latest 992-series 911 line-up.

Comprising five variants in total, the new-generation Porsche 911 GTS range is available in coupe, convertible or Targa forms, and can be had in rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive guises.

And unlike every other 992-series 911 in Australia except the upcoming GT3, the new GTS will be available at base level with a manual transmission.

Prices for the new 911 GTS start at $314,800 plus on-road costs – a $25,000 increase on the 991.2-generation GTS predecessor and an $80,000 premium on the most affordable 911 Carrera – and top out at $366,900 for the Targa 4 GTS.

Across all models, the GTS’ 3.0-litre turbocharged flat-six delivers an additional 22kW of power and 20Nm more torque than its predecessor, for a total of 353kW and 570Nm.

That power fillip correlates with an official 0-100km/h time of 3.3 seconds in automatic form – three-tenths faster than the previous GTS and nine-tenths faster than a base 283kW/450Nm Carrera.

For the purists, a short-throw seven-speed manual transmission will be available in Australia as a no-cost option on the base rear-drive GTS Coupe for the same $314,800 plus ORCs.

All other GTS models are fitted exclusively with an eight-speed dual-clutch PDK automatic.

The engine’s additional firepower is communicated by a GTS-specific standard exhaust system which is said to emit more noise and is augmented by less sound insulation inside the cabin.

Elsewhere, Porsche has applied a GTS-specific Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) tune that is adapted from the 911 Turbo’s ‘helper springs’. It means the GTS sits 10mm lower than Carrera models.

The GTS also borrows its brakes from the 911 Turbo, as well as its staggered 20-inch front and 21-inch rear centre-lock alloy wheels.

Visually, the 2022 Porsche 911 GTS is differentiated by black contrasting bodywork elements including the spoiler lip, alloy wheels and engine cover louvres, as well as requisite GTS badging.

LED headlight rims and daytime running light (DRL) rims are likewise darkened, while inside resides a black-themed interior that is adorned in suede-like Race-Tex microfibre.

The interior is fitted standard with a GT Sport steering wheel as well as the Sport Chrono package with mode switch, Porsche Track Precision app and a tyre temperature display.

The GTS’ sport seats provide electric four-way adjustment, while the latest-generation Porsche Communication Management (PCM) has been adjusted for integration of Android Auto, increased voice functionality and a revised buttons layout.

In Australia, 911 GTS models will be equipped as standard with metallic paint, auto-dimming mirrors including rain sensor, electrically-folding exterior mirrors, ParkAssist (front and rear) with reversing camera and Surround View, Lane Change Assist, Comfort Access, Power Steering Plus, steering wheel heating, seat heating (front), windscreen with grey top tint, tyre sealant and electric air compressor, BOSE Surround Sound System and digital radio.

Although unconfirmed, the GTS’s safety suite is expected to include six airbags and autonomous emergency braking, as well as a ‘wet mode’ that dials back settings to keep the car settled in damp conditions.

Australian customers will have the option of further light-weighting their ride with an additional Lightweight Design Package (cost unknown), which strips 25kg worth of heft courtesy of lighter carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) full bucket seats, lightweight glass for the side and rear windows, a lightweight battery and the removal of the rear seats.

The same optional package also integrates rear-axle steering and additional aerodynamic finishing touches.

The new Porsche 911 GTS models are available to order now and due to arrive in Australia from the first quarter of 2022.
