When the original Range Rover Evoque luxury SUV hit the scene in 2010, jaws dropped. The compact production car was almost identical to the concept car – a rarity in the automotive world – and the design was widely praised by the press and public alike.
The sales numbers don't lie, with more than 750,000 sales over its eight-year life. In that time it has also topped the small prestige SUV sales charts in Australia.
And now the sequel is so close you can almost taste it, ahead of the November 22 global preview of the all-new second-generation 2020 Range Rover Evoque. Land Rover will rip the covers off the Evoque's radical new design just before 7am (AEDT) November 23.
The new-generation Range Rover Evoque appears to be an even sleeker evolution of the current model, based on the wire-frame sculptures that have appeared across London to whet the appetite of motorists.
Judging from the art installations, the next Range Rover Evoque will be an evolution of the current model, with an assertive front-end design punctuated with even slimmer headlight clusters. Big wheels will be in the offing and the sloping roof and narrowing side windows towards the rear appear to be exaggerated for the new model.
There was talk the new model would be a compact version of the Range Rover Velar but it appears as though it will maintain its unique visuals.
Range Rover says the new design combines "simple lines with modernity" and the 1:1 scale wire sculptures emphasise the vehicle's coupe-like profile.
That said, it's understood the three-door Evoque has been axed but the convertible may return for active duty.
Although Range Rover hasn't official stated what engines will be under the bonnet, the British brand says the vehicle will introduce "new standards of design, capability and sustainability."
Sustainability usually translates to hybrid or EV powertrains.
If you're in London or know someone who may be interested, the sculptures can be found around Kensington and Chelsea – salubrious suburbs designed to convey the vehicle's luxury significance.
When the Evoque launched it virtually had the premium small SUV segment to itself but today that segment is teeming with popular rivals, chief among them the new BMW X2, Lexus NX and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe.
The reveal of the 2020 Range Rover Evoque can be streamed live on the Land Rover Youtube channel in the early hours of November 23, Aussie eastern time.
