The Ford T6 Ranger unveiled to the public at Sydney's Darling Harbour convention centre was arguably the highlight of the 2010 Australian International Motor Show.
All the elements were in place: Fresh, attractive styling in a HiLux-rivalling package with on-paper specifications that looked the goods. Not only did it take pride of place on the Ford stand (hinting how important the vehicle is in the local line-up), but it probably took some of the shine off the Volkswagen Amarok, which also made its local debut at the same time and place.
But now we've seen the T6 Ranger in its finished form , isn't it time for the wraps to come off the pre-production vehicles that are still out and about testing?
No way, says an insider at Ford. According to our source, the vehicles getting around on local roads are still wearing camo because they feature some "subtle design differences" from the high-spec dual cab Ranger displayed in Sydney two months ago.
We'll begin to see more of these derivatives next year, starting with, we believe, the Wildtrack variants at the Geneva Motor Show in March. The full range will be disclosed around mid-year, says our mole.
Ford will progressively reveal more details in a PR trickle-feed strategy for the new commercial vehicle between now and then. So this is just the beginning...
