New Rangie Sport leaked and teased again

Land Rover has released a second teaser video of its redesigned Range Rover Sport just days after the first unofficial images were leaked across the internet.

Due to make its global debut at next week’s New York motor show before going on sale in Australia later this year, the 2014 Rangie Sport was teased in an official video and image a week ago.

In a novel approach, the new video depicts the Rangie Sport being unloaded in New York from the same shipping container it was seen being loaded into in the UK in the first teaser video.

Both videos show only fleeting glimpses of the all-new luxury SUV, which will break official cover a day before the New York show in a daring cruise around the streets of the Big Apple -- the vehicle's most lucrative metropolitan market.

However, a pair of smartphone photos posted last week by a Facebook user reveal the same contemporary new design first seen in spy shots last month.

It's now clear the next Sport takes inspiration from Range Rover’s popular entry-level Evoque, showing off pinched wrap-around headlights and matching tail-lights, along with a sporty new grille design.

Although it’s based on the same ground-breaking new all-aluminium platform as the new Range Rover, the Sport continues to be differentiated by trademark styling cues like ‘faster’ front and rear glass, a rising shoulder line and much shorter overhangs at both ends.

Other prominent visual features include blacked-out pillars, new character lines along the vehicle's flanks, contemporary rear-end styling and a much sleeker profile.

The new Rangie Sport is being touted as the most dynamic vehicle Land Rover has ever built, but the British SUV brand is keeping the vehicle's vital statistics secret for now.

What we do know is that, because the performance-oriented SUV is based on the new L405 Range Rover’s alloy monocoque platform (which brings weight savings of up to 400kg in the flagship off-roader), the new Rangie Sport will also be significantly lighter and therefore quicker, more dynamic and more efficient.

Land Rover’s answer to the Porsche Cayenne and BMW X5 is also likely to borrow from the Rangie’s suite of upgraded petrol and diesel powertrains.

They include 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 (180kW/600Nm), 5.0-litre petrol V8 (276kW/510Nm) and supercharged petrol 5.0-litre V8 (375kW/625Nm) engines, matched to eight-speed automatic transmissions.

As with the Range Rover hybrid also due on sale here this year, a new 250kW V6 diesel-electric drivetrain will power the first Range Rover Sport.

The new 4.4-litre turbo-diesel V8 engine (250kW/700Nm) available in the regular Rangie could easily be transplanted into the Sport, while a 253kW supercharged 3.0-litre petrol V6 from the Jaguar F-TYPE could also be made available.
