New Suzuki Baleno breaks cover

Australia waits for green light as Suzuki uncovers big update for light hatchback in India

Suzuki has torn the covers off its new 2022 Suzuki Baleno hatchback that promises a series of segment-first technologies and improved ride and handling courtesy of an “all-new” – but still-to-be-detailed – suspension set-up.

Carrying a fresh exterior design and more refined interior styling, the new Suzuki Baleno is described by the car-maker as “new age” but looks to be a significant update for the seven-year-old model rather than a generational change.

Suzuki Australia hasn’t yet confirmed local details, but the Indian branch of the Japanese company – where the Baleno is designed, developed and built – says the new look gifts the compact hatch a stronger and more dynamic stance.

Maruti Suzuki also says the “sharp character lines” translate into a more driver-focused cabin, where there’s a sporty new flat-bottomed steering wheel, dual-tone interior colour scheme and a head-up display.

Infotainment duties are taken care of by an updated multimedia system, accessed via a new floating 9.0-inch touch-screen.

Other spec highlights include a 360-degree camera, next-generation Suzuki Connect app, LED projector headlights, LED fog lights, 16-inch alloy wheels and automatic climate control.

In India, the Baleno will soldier on with a naturally-aspirated 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine developing 66kW/113Nm.

However, Australian-market Baleno models feature a bigger 1.4-litre engine churning out 68kW/130Nm.
