Toyota Aygo X Prologue previews new baby SUV

Japanese car-maker reveals close-to-production SUV replacement for the city car it sells in Europe

The drapes have finally come off the Toyota Aygo X Prologue concept that's hotly tipped to preview a baby SUV replacement for the current Toyota Aygo city car.

Set to go on sale in the middle of 2022, the latest Toyota crossover measures in at 3700mm long and 1500mm tall, with a 2340mm wheelbase.

This makes the 2022 Toyota Aygo X longer (+245mm) and fractionally taller (+40mm) than the hatch, with a stretched (+90mm) wheelbase for more interior space.

Originally, it was thought its radical front-end styling, which lacked any openings in the early teaser, previewed a pure-electric SUV.

Toyota is readying a RAV4-sized EV and will reveal it soon.

The new Toyota Aygo X, meanwhile, sports a huge hexagonal lower air-intake below the beltline that directs air to its electrified combustion engine.

Rumoured to be close to production, only the large 19-inch wheels and wide wheel-arches will be toned down for the final vehicle. The raised ride height and unusual front light clusters are expected to stay.

Toyota hasn't officially confirmed details, but it's thought the new Aygo X sits on the same TNGA GA-B architecture as the Toyota Yaris.

The new model is also set to share powertrains with the larger Toyota light hatch, offered with both a conventional 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, plus a flagship hybrid version.

Pricing will be kept low, with the Toyota Aygo X expected to cost around €15,000 ($A23,000).

The switch from city car to baby SUV could put the car-maker's smallest vehicle back on Toyota Australia's radar, although the fact it's built at the car-maker's Kolin plant in the Czech Republic could rule it out for our market over pricing concerns.
