New vehicle regos up 11%

VFACTS stats for January reveal strong growth – but the devil's in the details

New vehicle registrations for January 2013 topped 85,000 units – an increase of over 11 per cent on 2012.

The latest figures released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) show that 85,430 passenger cars, SUVs and commercial vehicles were registered in January. This figure is up 11.3 per cent or 8647 vehicles compared to the opening month of 2012.

FCAI reports sales growth was again driven by non traditional passenger car segments. SUV slogged a 20.1 per cent increase in registration compared with January 2012 and made up 31.2 per cent of the total market. Light commercials were also sharply up – regos were up 43.9 per cent on the back of what the FCAI categorised as a "very strong surge in the sales" of 4x4 pickups. This sub-category was up 63.6 per cent increase (3897 units) compared with January last year.

Mazda3 achieved the highest for the month (3345 units), followed by the Toyota Corolla (2960), the Toyota Hilux (2747), the Nissan Navara (2474) and the Ford Focus (2364).

Toyota was the best performing brand overall in January selling 13,375 vehicles, followed by Mazda with 8912 and then Holden with 8811.

Of concern to Holden, Ford and Toyota –and the local manufacturing sector overall -- is the news sales of locally manufactured vehicles dropping by 28.4 per cent (2722 units) compared with the same time in 2012.
