New Volkswagen Caddy Mini-Camper previewed

Latest camper based on Mk5 Caddy van features a redesigned bed and panoramic glass roof for stargazing

Volkswagen has released pictures of an all-new replacement for the VW Caddy Beach that was previously sold in Australia from $46,990 drive-away.

Renamed the Volkswagen Caddy Mini-Camper, the all-new lifestyle-orientated small van is again created for the great outdoors but boasts a new range of features designed to make camping out in the bush more comfortable.

Set to be fully unveiled this September ahead of its launch later this year, the new Mini-Camper is based on the latest fifth-generation Caddy panel van.

That means it's based on Volkswagen's latest MQB architecture that's shared with the new Mk8 VW Golf.

In Europe buyers will get the choice of either an 85kW 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine or a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder in 55kW, 75kW or 90kW tunes.

Volkswagen has yet to reveal full details, but new features for the 2020 Caddy Mini-Camper include the same alloy wheels, LED headlights, roof rails and 1.5 square-metre panoramic glass roof as the Caddy minivan.

Inside, the Mini-Camper's new standout feature is a full two-metre foldout bed, plus new blinds for the side windows and panoramic roof.

That bed, should you need some space, can be easily removed to convert the Mini-Camper back into a van.

Other handy new additions include foldable camping chairs from the larger California van, which can be stored under the bed.

Fresh extras include the choice of various awnings and carrying systems for the roof rack.

New tech includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel and a touch-screen infotainment system that slashes the number of buttons and is available in three sizes: 6.25-, 8.25- and 10-inch.

Like the new Golf, there’s advanced voice control and the system is Apple CarPlay compatible. Even wireless phone charging, keyless ignition and an electric tailgate become an option.

As far as driving aids go, the Caddy gets Volkswagen’s ACC 2.0 adaptive cruise control that works in stop-start traffic. There’s also a new trailer assist function, side assist and rear traffic alert.
