Lexus will use next week's New York motor show to preview the all-new replacement for its GS range via the edgy LF-Gh (Lexus Future Grand touring Hybrid) concept, the company releasing more images of the car it previewed in teaser images last week.
The aggressive design study is the latest embodiment of the brand's so-called 'L-Finesse' styling philosophy and it shows Lexus is going for a harder, more sporting look than that worn by the current (third-generation) GS, which has been around since 2005.
Look closely and you'll notice a few design elements borrowed from the hardcore LFA, as well as the brawny IS F.
The most notable features of the concept are the oversize grille (which sets the template for future Lexus offerings), slit-like headlights and elaborate LED taillights. These are likely to be toned down for the eventual production version, but the concept still provides a good indication of what to expect.
The LF-Gh also makes do without wing mirrors or conventional door handles, but, once again, don't expect these omissions to be replicated on the production-ready version.
The concept stretches 4890mm long, 1870mm wide and 1450mm high, which means it's around 40mm longer, 50mm wider and 20mm taller than the current GS, but the added girth is well disguised by the car's taut, muscular styling.
It's reasonable to assume the larger dimensions will liberate extra cabin space but, of course, the reality will only be known once we've had a chance to slide into the innards of the production variant (which may surface at this year's Tokyo motor show in December).
Going on the accompanying images, we're prepared to volunteer a preliminary thumbs-up to the concept, as it indicates Lexus is set to finally banish the staid (albeit immaculately screwed together) identity that's thus far been the brand's hallmark.
The company hasn't as yet divulged any technical details pertaining to the concept (all we know is that it's a hybrid), but no doubt there'll be more information to go on once the car is revealed at the New York show.
It's expected the eventual production version will be offered with V6 and V8 propulsion, in addition to a hybrid powertrain.
