Subaru wants to make a bigger distinction between its performance WRX model and the more sedate donor Impreza.
During the launch of the new generation Impreza sedan and hatch in New York this week company executives confirmed future models will be separated by more than just engines, badging and body bits like spoilers.
But don't expect a departure from the current arrangement for a while... At least two years insiders say. Indeed, Subaru will make the most of the new Impreza's setup for both models until the model is freshened -- perhaps in 2014-15.
Highlights of the new, fourth-generation Impreza include more cabin space -- enabled by a longer wheelbase -- although external dimensions remain close to the existing version. There's also added focus on fuel efficiency.
Subaru executives admit this formula makes it harder to optimise for a performance version. They are therefore aiming to eventually offer two distinct families of its midsize sedan/hatch model.
They also admitted a decision on platform sharing (or not!) between Impreza and the WRX could not be confirmed yet. It is, however, increasingly likely they will be developed individually.
Subaru insiders were tightlipped about the details of the new WRX strategy. Not keen to be quoted they were nonetheless obviously excited by the future prospects for the iconic nameplate.
If key snippets and their body language are anything to go by, WRX fans won't be disappointed.
