NEW YORK MOTOR SHOW: Kia Optima sedan to debut

Sedan version of Kia’s stylish Optima shooting brake will be revealed at the New York motor show next month

Following on from the Geneva reveal of the sleek Sportspace wagon concept, Kia has issued a teaser sketch of its all-new Optima sedan that will be unveiled at the New York motor show next month.

Designed in Germany, the new sedan reaches Australian showrooms this October and is said to be virtually identical to the Geneva Sportspace concept from the B-pillars forward, says its designer Gregory Guillaume.

According to Guillaume, small details like the sedan concept’s concealed door-handles, slimline wing mirrors and blacked-out grille and LED headlights will be changed for production.

Like the wagon, the sedan’s generous proportions will provide a spacious cabin for five.

As already reported by motoring.com.au, the next-generation front-wheel drive Optima sedan will be available with the choice of a four-cylinder petrol engine and, for the first time, a 180kW turbo-petrol engine like Hyundai's new Sonata, as well as a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain.

The plug-in diesel hybrid, first seen in the Optima T-Hybrid concept, will also be available in some markets but is not yet confirmed for Australia. Combining a 1.7-litre turbo-diesel engine with a 48-volt electric ‘booster,' the T-Hybrid system is capable of driving all four wheels.

This year's new mid-size sedan is expected to be joined by the sporty Optima wagon sometime before mid-2016.
