NEW YORK MOTOR SHOW: Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid

Nissan claims hybrid SUV offers 9L/100km combined fuel economy and 846km driving range – without compromise
Nissan used the New York motor show to whip the covers off a hybrid version of its all-new monocoque-bodied Pathfinder.
The petrol-electric Pathie joins the Nissan US line-up later this year, commanding a premium of roughly $3000 over its similarly specced 3.5-litre V6 counterparts while retaining the latter’s seven-seat format and 1590kg towing capacity.
Propulsion for the Pathfinder Hybrid is provided by a new supercharged 2.5-litre petrol engine and an electric motor with a compact Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery. The 15kW electric motor and petrol engine work in tandem to provide performance similar to the conventional Pathfinder, according to Nissan.
The system, which appears to be related to the drivetrain underpinning Nissan's Resonance concept from earlier this year, is rated at 187kW and 330Nm – versus the conventional 3.5-litre V6’s 194kW and 325Nm, and the Hybrid also uses a Nissan Intelligent Dual Clutch System (one motor/two-clutch parallel system) that manages power from both the electric motor and the petrol engine.
Positioned between the petrol engine and the Xtronic CVT (where the torque converter would normally be), the electric motor also functions as a generator, conveying deceleration force from the CVT to the battery. One clutch is installed between the petrol engine and the electric motor, the other within the CVT.
The Pathfinder Hybrid’s overall consumption figure of 9L/100km is claimed to be 24 per cent better than its conventional counterpart, while the 74-litre fuel tank is claimed to deliver a touring range of more than 846km.
The hybrid system supposedly doesn’t impinge on the Pathfinder’s interior space as the space-saving Li-ion battery is housed under the third-row seat, preserving the Pathfinder’s second- row sliding functionality and easy access to the third row.
A regenerative braking system automatically recharges the battery by converting the vehicle’s kinetic energy that would be otherwise lost in braking.
Visually, the Pathfinder Hybrid is distinguishable from its conventional V6-powerd counterpart by LED taillights and Nissan PUREDRIVE Hybrid badges. In addition, hybrid information screens are added to the instrument panel’s Advanced Drive-Assist Display.
Nissan North America product planning boss Pierre Loing said: “The Pathfinder Hybrid is highly affordable because it matches motor and battery size well, while minimising the number of additional parts or modifications needed to the platform and body.
“It is designed as a logical bridge between conventional internal combustion engine powertrains and the wider acceptance of hybrid systems by providing enhanced efficiency with no compromises versus the standard vehicle.”
