NEW YORK MOTOR SHOW: Toyota facelifts Camry
Cosmetic tweaks and interior upgrade for last locally manufactured Toyota to be unveiled next monthToyota Australia will introduce a mid-life cycle refresh for its locally-manufactured Camry next year – possibly as early as the first quarter.
The programmed revision for Camry will make its debut at the New York motor show during April. An American-based PR executive has already emailed media outlets to confirm the updated model will be there.
The changes – reportedly limited mostly to cosmetic details inside and out – will be carried over for the final years of production at Toyota's local assembly plant at Altona, in Melbourne's west. Some of the changes for Camry are expected to apply to the V6-engined Aurion as well, although Steve Coughlan, Toyota Australia's Product Public Relations Manager, was not in a position to reveal much about the extent of changes to either car, or timing.
"It's still a little bit too early for us," he admitted to motoring.com.au this afternoon. "We will receive [updated] Camry sometime next year... In terms of timing we'll let you know a little closer to the date."
Toyota Australia has committed to building the updated model, and has received government funds through co-contribution to make it happen. Given that the manufacturer is closing the facility in Altona from 2017, the updated Camry seems unnecessary on the face of it, although maintaining consumer interest in Camry is likely to remain important for the sake of future (imported) sales after 2017.
