Pictures of the next-generation BMW 2 Series Coupe have appeared online long before its expected launch in 2021.
The images, posted overnight on BMW forum
, are said to show either an early prototype or 1:1-scale clay model, and are thought to have been captured at BMW Group's Research and Innovation Center in Munich. If they are genuine, the 2021 BMW 2 Series Coupe will feature a toned down version of the car-maker's dominant kidney grille, which will grow to an unprecedented size on the upcoming BMW 4 Series Coupe.
The presence of an aggressive front bumper, rear air blades and a big rear diffuser suggests the car pictured is probably a replacement for the current M240i.
That means it could be powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine that should push out around 260kW.
Smaller 1.5-litre three-cylinder and 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engines will also be offered.
Perhaps the most important news for performance car fans is that the next-generation BMW 2 Series Coupe will remain rear-wheel drive.
Instead of switching to the car-maker's front-drive UKL platform, like the rest of the 2 Series range, the two-door 2 Series Coupe is set to be based on the same CLAR platform as the bigger 3 Series.
Keeping enthusiasts happy, the 2 Series Coupe will also be available with six-speed manual, as well as eight-speed automatic, transmissions.
A follow-up to the brilliant BMW M2 and M2 Competition is also expected and is secretly being developed under the G87 codename.
Expect the new baby M car to come with a detuned M4 powertrain pushing out at least 315k when it arrives in late 2021 or early 2022.
Unfortunately for sun-worshipers, BMW will not offer a new BMW 2 Series Convertible this time around following a drop-off in sales for the last model.
Set to be unveiled early next year, the BMW 2 Series Coupe is expected to be on sale before the end of 2021.
