New Mercedes-Benz GLC locked in

Incoming new Mercedes-Benz GLC mid-size SUV will offer PHEV version with 100km electric range

The new-generation 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC has been previewed ahead of its June 1 launch.

Posting a darkened image to preview the BMW X3 rival's rear-end styling, Mercedes announced that the next-generation mid-size luxury SUV will feature a full range of electrified powertrains, with all versions coming standard with its 4MATIC all-wheel drive system.

Benz also confirmed that the incoming GLC-Class will come with the brand's full plug-in hybrid powertrain technology that will deliver an electric range of "more than 100km kilometres" .

That's enough, Benz claims, for "virtually emission-free everyday use".

From the image released, it's clear that the new GLC will get evolutionary styling with slimmer tail-light clusters and a more heavily sculpted rear bumper, while the multi-spoke rims and hint at a faux diffuser suggests it might be the AMG Line trim.

Beneath the skin, the GLC will share much with the latest fifth-generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class (W206), with the SUV set to be based on its MRA II modular platform that is also used on the much bigger and more luxurious Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

If so, expect the base four-cylinder engines to come with a 15kW integrated starter generator and a 48-volt electrical system.

It's thought flagship AMG GLC 43 4MATIC versions will get a powerful 2.0-litre turbo that will produce 300kW and 500Nm of torque.

To give the GLC the practicality edge over the C-Class wagon, the new SUV will feature 'variable space' within the cabin – a hint it will get a sliding and removeable rear bench.

Other new innovations include the introduction of Benz's latest MBUX infotainment system that will blend a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a large 11.9-inch infotainment.

Once fully unveiled on June 1 it's thought the Mercedes-Benz GLC should land in Australian showrooms before the end of this year.
